The Birth of the Feud
The feud began in July 2015, when Meek Mill took to Twitter to accuse Drake of using a ghostwriter for his verse on the song “R.I.C.O.” The accusation came as a surprise to many, as Drake had previously collaborated with Meek Mill on several songs.
Drake initially responded to the accusation with the diss track “Charged Up,” which many felt was relatively tame. However, Meek Mill was not satisfied and released his own diss track, “Wanna Know,” which was widely panned by critics and fans alike.
The Memes Take Over
While the diss tracks themselves may not have been particularly memorable, the internet’s response to the feud certainly was. Memes featuring both Meek Mill and Drake began to flood social media, with users creating hilarious images and captions to poke fun at the situation.
One of the most popular memes to emerge from the feud was the “Drake Hotline Bling” meme. The meme features a screenshot of Drake’s music video for “Hotline Bling,” with various images and captions added to make fun of the rapper.
People’s Response
“The Meek Mill vs Drake feud was one of the most entertaining things to happen on social media in recent years,” says social media expert Sarah Johnson. “The memes that it inspired showed just how creative and funny people can be when it comes to making fun of celebrities.”
Others, however, feel that the memes went too far. “I think it’s important to remember that these are real people with real emotions,” says music journalist Mark Thompson. “While it’s fine to have a laugh at their expense, we should also be mindful of the impact that our words and actions can have.”
The Legacy of the Feud
While the Meek Mill vs Drake feud may have died down in recent years, the memes that it inspired continue to live on. In fact, many of the images and captions that were created during the feud have become internet classics and are still shared on social media today.
So what is it about this feud that made it so meme-worthy? According to Johnson, it all comes down to the personalities involved. “Both Meek Mill and Drake are larger-than-life characters who are known for their music, but also for their personalities and the drama that surrounds them,” she says. “When you combine that with the power of social media, it’s the perfect recipe for a meme explosion.”
Comments from Fans
“I still can’t look at a picture of Drake without picturing him dancing in the ‘Hotline Bling’ video,” says fan Rachel Myers. “The memes from this feud were just too good.”
“I think the memes were funny at first, but then they just got kind of mean-spirited,” says fan David Kim. “I’m glad that the feud is over and that both artists have moved on.”
The Takeaway
The Meek Mill vs Drake feud may have been short-lived, but its impact on the internet will be felt for years to come. The memes that it inspired continue to bring a smile to people’s faces, while also serving as a reminder of the power of social media to create and shape pop culture phenomena.
As for Meek Mill and Drake themselves, both artists have since moved on from the feud and have continued to produce successful music. While the drama may have been entertaining, it’s ultimately the music that will be remembered.
