It’s been almost a decade since the infamous Linus Mac Loss meme took the internet by storm. For those who may not remember, the meme features a screenshot of Linus Sebastian, the founder of the popular tech YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips, looking devastated while holding a MacBook. The image quickly became a viral sensation and has since been used to express disappointment or frustration in various situations.

The Origins of the Meme

The Linus Mac Loss meme first appeared in a video uploaded to Linus Tech Tips’ YouTube channel on January 16, 2013. In the video, Linus unboxed and reviewed the then-new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. While he praised the laptop’s design and performance, he expressed disappointment that it only had two USB ports and no Ethernet port.

It was during this part of the video that Linus made the now-iconic facial expression that would be immortalized in meme form. The screenshot was later posted on the Linus Tech Tips forum and quickly spread to other corners of the internet.

The Impact of the Meme

The Linus Mac Loss meme quickly became a staple of internet culture, with people using it to express disappointment, frustration, and defeat in a variety of contexts. It’s been used to mock everything from failed video game launches to disappointing election results.

Many people found the meme relatable because it captured the feeling of being let down by something you were excited about. Others appreciated the humor in Linus’ exaggerated expression and the versatility of the meme itself.

Responses from Linus and Other Tech Influencers

Despite the meme’s popularity, Linus himself hasn’t always been a fan. In a Q&A video posted to the Linus Tech Tips channel in 2018, he expressed frustration with the meme’s continued use and said that he wished people would move on from it.

Other tech influencers have also weighed in on the meme over the years. Some have praised Linus for being a good sport and embracing the meme, while others have criticized the internet for turning a harmless moment into something that’s sometimes used to mock or belittle him.

Comments from Fans

“I love the Linus Mac Loss meme! It’s so versatile and always makes me laugh.” “I feel bad for Linus sometimes, but he seems to take it all in stride. Plus, the meme is hilarious.” “I think people need to remember that Linus is a real person with real feelings. It’s one thing to laugh at the meme, but it’s another to use it to bully or harass him.”

The Legacy of the Meme

Despite Linus’ wish for the meme to fade into obscurity, it’s still going strong almost a decade later. In fact, it’s become so ubiquitous that some people may not even realize where it originated.

For better or worse, the Linus Mac Loss meme has cemented its place in internet history. It’s a reminder of the power of a single image to capture a moment and spark a cultural phenomenon.
