Memes have become a staple of internet culture. They are funny, relatable, and often reflect current events and pop culture. However, not all memes are created equal. There are levels to this meme game, and understanding the evolution of memes can help you appreciate the art form even more. In this article, we’ll explore the different levels of memes and how they have changed over time.
Table of Contents
Level One: Basic Memes
Basic memes are the most straightforward and often the most relatable. They consist of a simple image with a funny caption. These memes tend to be easy to create and share, making them a popular choice for beginners. Examples of basic memes include the “Distracted Boyfriend” meme, the “Ermahgerd” meme, and the “Bad Luck Brian” meme. According to Mark, a social media expert, “Basic memes are a great way to break into meme culture. They are easy to understand and often require minimal context. However, they tend to lose popularity quickly and are quickly replaced by newer, more relevant memes.”
Level Two: Reaction Memes
Reaction memes, as the name suggests, are memes that are used to express a reaction to a situation or event. They often feature a character or image with a specific facial expression or body language that is meant to convey a particular emotion. Examples of reaction memes include the “Picard Facepalm” meme, the “Ight, Imma head out” meme, and the “Kermit Sipping Tea” meme. According to Sarah, a meme enthusiast, “Reaction memes are great because they allow us to express how we feel without having to say anything. They are often used in response to current events or pop culture, making them a great way to stay relevant.”
Level Three: Dank Memes
Dank memes are a step up from basic and reaction memes. They are often more obscure and require a deeper understanding of internet culture to appreciate fully. Dank memes often use surreal or nonsensical humor and are not meant to be taken seriously. Examples of dank memes include the “Spongebob Mocking” meme, the “Expanding Brain” meme, and the “Pepe the Frog” meme. According to Alex, a meme connoisseur, “Dank memes are like the inside joke of the internet. They require a deeper understanding of internet culture and often reference obscure memes from the past. They are not for everyone, but for those who appreciate them, they are the pinnacle of meme culture.”
Level Four: Meta Memes
Meta memes are memes that are self-referential or self-aware. They often reference other memes or the meme culture itself. Meta memes require an even deeper understanding of meme culture and are often created by meme creators themselves. Examples of meta memes include the “This is Fine” meme, the “Expanding Brain 2” meme, and the “Loss” meme. According to John, a meme creator, “Meta memes are like the final boss of meme culture. They require an understanding of not only current memes but also the history of memes. They are often created by meme creators themselves, making them a way for us to poke fun at ourselves and our own culture.”
Level Five: Wholesome Memes
Wholesome memes are a recent addition to meme culture. They are memes that promote positivity, kindness, and optimism. Wholesome memes often feature cute animals or heartwarming stories and are meant to make people feel good. Examples of wholesome memes include the “You’re breathtaking” meme, the “Blep” meme, and the “Respectful Memes” meme. According to Emily, a meme lover, “Wholesome memes are a breath of fresh air in the often negative world of meme culture. They remind us that memes can be more than just funny pictures on the internet, they can also be a force for good.”
In Conclusion
Memes have come a long way since their inception. From basic memes to wholesome memes, there are levels to this meme game. Understanding the evolution of memes can help us appreciate the art form even more. As meme culture continues to evolve, who knows what the next level of memes will be.
