Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Shark Know Your Meme from knowyourmeme.com

In 2015, Katy Perry set the stage on fire with her stunning halftime show performance at the Super Bowl XLIX. The pop superstar performed her hit songs including “Roar,” “Teenage Dream,” and “California Gurls” while riding on a giant mechanical lion and dancing with a group of backup dancers dressed as sharks. However, it was a particular moment during the show that caught the attention of the internet and created one of the most memorable memes of all time.

The Birth of the Meme

During the performance of her hit song “Teenage Dream,” Katy Perry was accompanied by a backup dancer dressed in a shark costume. This dancer, who later was identified as Bryan Gaw, became an instant internet sensation with his hilarious dance moves and enthusiastic performance.

However, it was during the song’s bridge that the now-famous moment happened. Katy Perry was singing the line, “You think I’m pretty without any makeup on,” while the camera panned to Gaw, who was struggling to keep up with the choreography, and seemed to be out of sync with the other dancers.

Within minutes of the performance, the internet exploded with memes featuring the awkwardly dancing shark. The meme quickly spread across social media platforms and became a global sensation.

The Impact of the Meme

The “Left Shark” meme became so popular that it even inspired a line of merchandise, including t-shirts, phone cases, and even plush toys. The meme also led to numerous parodies and remixes of the original performance. People all around the world were recreating the dance moves of the “Left Shark” and posting their videos on social media.

The meme also had a significant impact on Katy Perry’s career. The pop star embraced the meme and even incorporated the “Left Shark” into her merchandise and stage costumes. The meme helped to solidify Katy Perry’s position as a pop culture icon and cemented her place in the history of Super Bowl halftime performances.

The Legacy of the Meme

Even six years after the performance, the “Left Shark” meme is still popular and continues to inspire parodies and remixes. The meme has become a part of the pop culture lexicon and is a testament to the power of the internet and social media.

Many people who remember the original performance and the meme still talk about it today. Some even consider it to be one of the greatest moments in Super Bowl halftime show history.
