The Sonic the Hedgehog movie may have been released back in 2020, but it’s still making waves in the internet world. Specifically, the movie’s redesign of Sonic himself has inspired a plethora of memes, videos, and jokes that have taken over social media. In this post, we’ll take a look at some of the most popular Sonic movie memes and why they’ve captured the attention of so many internet users.
The Sonic Movie Redesign: A Brief History
Before we dive into the memes themselves, it’s important to understand the context behind them. When the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released in 2019, fans were immediately taken aback by Sonic’s design. The character looked drastically different from his video game counterpart, with realistic fur, human-like teeth, and oddly proportioned limbs.
Internet users were quick to voice their displeasure with the design, and the backlash was so intense that the movie’s release was delayed so that Sonic could be redesigned. The new design, which was released in November of 2019, was much more faithful to the original video game character, and fans were pleased with the changes.
The Sonic Movie Meme Compilation
Now, onto the memes themselves. There are countless Sonic movie memes out there, but we’ll focus on a few of the most popular ones.
“Gotta Go Fast”
One of the most common memes to come out of the Sonic movie is the phrase “Gotta go fast.” This phrase is a reference to Sonic’s speed, which is a defining characteristic of the character in both the video games and the movie. The phrase has been used in countless memes and videos, often accompanied by footage of Sonic running at lightning-fast speeds.
“Sonic Says”
Another popular meme is the “Sonic Says” meme. This meme takes advantage of Sonic’s wholesome, family-friendly image by creating fake “Sonic Says” quotes that are often absurd or inappropriate. For example, one “Sonic Says” quote might be “Sonic says it’s okay to steal from your friends,” accompanied by a picture of Sonic winking.
“Sanic”
The “Sanic” meme is a bit more niche, but it’s still popular among Sonic fans. This meme takes advantage of Sonic’s original, poorly drawn design from the early days of the video game franchise. The result is a hilariously terrible-looking version of Sonic that has become a meme in its own right.
Why These Memes Have Taken Over the Internet
So, why have these Sonic movie memes become so popular? There are a few reasons.
Firstly, the Sonic franchise has a massive fanbase that has been around for decades. Fans of the video games and TV shows have grown up with the character and have a deep affection for him. When the Sonic movie was announced, fans were excited to see their favorite character on the big screen. When the first trailer was released and Sonic’s design was so different from what fans were used to, it was a shock to the system. The resulting memes were a way for fans to cope with their disappointment.
Secondly, the memes are often incredibly funny. The absurdity of some of the “Sonic Says” quotes or the ridiculousness of the “Sanic” meme is impossible not to laugh at. The humor of the memes has helped them spread like wildfire across social media.
