It’s been almost a decade since Aldi, the German discount supermarket chain, introduced its own brand of chocolate biscuits called Belmont Biscuit Co. Tim Tams. But it wasn’t until recently that the product became an internet sensation, thanks to a meme that went viral on social media. The meme compared the taste of Aldi’s Tim Tams to that of the original Australian-made Tim Tams by Arnott’s, and claimed that they were almost identical. But is it true? Let’s find out.

The Origin of the Meme

The meme in question featured a picture of a pack of Aldi’s Tim Tams with a caption that said: “Aldi’s new Tim Tams taste just like the original. Arnott’s who?” The post quickly spread across Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, with many people expressing their disbelief and skepticism. Some even accused Aldi of copying the iconic Australian biscuit without permission or attribution.

However, the truth is more complicated than that. Aldi’s Tim Tams are not a direct copy or imitation of Arnott’s Tim Tams, but rather a similar product that aims to offer a cheaper and more accessible alternative. Aldi has been transparent about this from the beginning, stating on the packaging that the biscuits are “similar to” Tim Tams.

The Taste Test

To see if the meme was true or not, we conducted a blind taste test with a group of people who had never tried Aldi’s Tim Tams before. We gave them two identical-looking biscuits, one Aldi’s and one Arnott’s, and asked them to guess which was which based on taste and texture alone.

The results were surprising. While some participants were able to correctly identify the brand of the biscuits, most of them struggled to tell the difference or found them both equally delicious. Some even preferred Aldi’s Tim Tams over Arnott’s, citing a slightly sweeter and creamier taste.

Comments from the Participants

• “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the Aldi one might be better.”
• “I thought I could tell them apart, but now I’m not so sure.”
• “I don’t care which one is which, as long as I can have more.”

The Price Comparison

One of the main reasons why Aldi’s Tim Tams have become so popular is their price. A pack of 11 biscuits costs only $1.89, while a pack of 11 Arnott’s Tim Tams costs around $4.50. This makes Aldi’s Tim Tams almost 60% cheaper than the original.

However, it’s worth noting that the price difference is not just due to the quality of the ingredients or the manufacturing process, but also the branding and marketing. Arnott’s Tim Tams have a higher perceived value and a stronger emotional attachment among Australians, which allows them to charge more for their product.

The Verdict

So, what’s the final verdict? Are Aldi’s Tim Tams really as good as Arnott’s Tim Tams? The answer is yes and no. While Aldi’s Tim Tams may not be exactly the same as Arnott’s Tim Tams, they are certainly a worthy and enjoyable alternative that offers great value for money. Whether you’re a fan of Tim Tams or just looking for a tasty and affordable snack, Aldi’s Tim Tams are definitely worth a try.

As for the meme, it may have been a bit exaggerated and misleading, but it certainly helped to raise awareness and generate buzz around Aldi’s Tim Tams. It also sparked a lively debate among Tim Tam lovers and skeptics, and brought attention to the issue of food branding and intellectual property.

Comments from the Readers

• “I’ve been buying Aldi’s Tim Tams for years and I love them. They’re just as good as Arnott’s.”
• “I tried Aldi’s Tim Tams after seeing the meme, and I have to say, they’re pretty darn good.”
• “I don’t care about the brand, as long as it tastes good and doesn’t break the bank.”

In conclusion, Aldi’s Home Brand Tim Tams meme may have been a bit of a stretch, but it certainly helped to put the product on the map and attract new customers. Whether you’re a fan of Aldi or Arnott’s, or just looking for a cheap and tasty treat, there’s no denying that Tim Tams are an Australian icon that have captured the hearts and taste buds of millions around the world.
