The Origins of the Meme
The “I Can Hear God” meme first gained traction in 2019, when a Twitter user posted a photo of a woman with the caption “I can hear God telling me you’re lying.” The tweet quickly went viral, and soon after, other variations of the meme began to surface.
One popular version of the meme features a photo of a man with his hands raised in the air, as if he’s in the middle of a religious experience. The caption reads “I can hear God,” followed by a response like “I can hear my stomach growling.”
Controversy and Criticism
As with any meme that touches on religious themes, the “I Can Hear God” meme has faced its fair share of criticism. Some people find the meme to be disrespectful to those who hold religious beliefs, while others argue that it’s simply a harmless joke.
One Twitter user wrote, “As a Christian, I find the ‘I Can Hear God’ meme to be offensive and insensitive. It trivializes the idea of hearing from God, which is a deeply personal and meaningful experience for many people.”
Others, however, see the meme as a way to challenge the often-serious tone of religious discourse. “I think the ‘I Can Hear God’ meme is hilarious,” one person wrote on Reddit. “It pokes fun at the idea that religious experiences have to be solemn and serious all the time.”
