In the world of sports, there are always players who become the center of attention for various reasons. In 2018, Zane Gonzalez, the former kicker for the Cleveland Browns, became the subject of countless memes and jokes on social media. From missed kicks to awkward facial expressions, Gonzalez unintentionally provided the internet with a goldmine of comedic content.

The Infamous Game Against the New Orleans Saints

The trend began during a game between the Browns and the New Orleans Saints on September 16, 2018. Gonzalez missed two field goals and two extra points, which ultimately cost the Browns the game. However, it wasn’t just the missed kicks that caught the attention of social media users. It was also the image of Gonzalez on the sidelines, looking distraught and defeated.

The image quickly went viral, with users creating memes and jokes about the kicker’s performance. Some even went as far as to photoshop his face onto crying Jordan memes, a popular internet meme at the time.

The Birth of the Zane Gonzalez Meme

After the game, the memes continued to flood social media. Users created images with captions such as “When you miss two field goals and two extra points,” accompanied by a picture of Gonzalez looking defeated on the sidelines. The memes became so popular that they even caught the attention of national media outlets.

Gonzalez himself even acknowledged the memes, stating in an interview with Cleveland.com, “I think it’s funny. I have a sense of humor about it. I’m not going to let it get to me.”

The Legacy of the Zane Gonzalez Meme

The Zane Gonzalez meme trend continued for several weeks, with new memes popping up every day. However, it wasn’t just about making fun of the kicker’s performance. Many users also created memes to show their support for Gonzalez and to encourage him to keep pushing forward.

Even after Gonzalez was released from the Browns and signed with the Arizona Cardinals, the memes continued. However, this time, they were more focused on the kicker’s impressive performance on the field. Gonzalez went on to have a successful season with the Cardinals, and the memes slowly faded away.

The Impact of Memes on Sports Culture

The Zane Gonzalez meme trend is just one example of how memes have become a part of sports culture. They provide a way for fans to connect with their favorite teams and players, and they also give athletes a way to show their personality and sense of humor.

However, memes can also have a negative impact on athletes, especially when they are the subject of jokes and ridicule. It’s important for fans to remember that athletes are human beings with feelings, and that their performance on the field does not define who they are as individuals.

Responses from Fans and Critics

Many fans and critics had mixed reactions to the Zane Gonzalez meme trend. Some found it hilarious and entertaining, while others felt that it was disrespectful and unnecessary.

One Twitter user wrote, “I love the Zane Gonzalez memes. They’re hilarious and they make me laugh every time I see them.” Another user wrote, “I think the memes are funny, but I also feel bad for the guy. It can’t be easy to have your face plastered all over the internet like that.”

On the other hand, some critics felt that the memes were in poor taste and that they went too far. One critic wrote, “The Zane Gonzalez memes are just mean-spirited. They’re not funny and they’re just adding insult to injury.”

Lessons Learned from the Zane Gonzalez Meme Trend

The Zane Gonzalez meme trend taught us several lessons about sports culture and social media. First and foremost, it showed us the power of memes to connect fans and athletes in a unique and entertaining way.

However, it also reminded us that athletes are human beings with feelings, and that we should always be mindful of the impact that our words and actions can have on them. In the end, the Zane Gonzalez meme trend was a fun and entertaining moment in sports history, but it also serves as a reminder to treat others with kindness and respect.
