Back in 2018, the United States was captivated by the controversial confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. While the political drama played out in the Senate and in the news, the internet had a field day creating funny Kavanaugh memes. Fast forward to 2023, and we’re taking a trip down memory lane to revisit some of the funniest memes that emerged during that time.
Table of Contents
The “I Like Beer” Meme
One of the most memorable moments from Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing was his repeated insistence that he liked beer. The internet wasted no time turning that phrase into a meme, with images of Kavanaugh holding a beer can and captions like “I’m not saying I’m Batman, but have you ever seen me and beer in the same room?”
Response from Twitter user @BeerLover123: “I’m a beer lover too, but even I thought Kavanaugh took it a bit too far. These memes are hilarious though!”
The “Boofing” Meme
During the hearing, Kavanaugh was asked about the meaning of the term “boofing,” which he claimed referred to flatulence. However, many people weren’t buying that explanation, and the internet ran with it. Memes featuring Kavanaugh and the phrase “I’m not saying I boofed, but I did inhale” were particularly popular.
Response from Reddit user u/BoofMaster69: “I can’t believe Kavanaugh thought he could get away with claiming boofing was just farting. These memes are the perfect way to roast him for it.”
The “Devil’s Triangle” Meme
Another term Kavanaugh struggled to explain was “devil’s triangle,” which he initially claimed was a drinking game. However, many people believed it was actually a reference to a sexual act involving two men and one woman. The resulting memes were both hilarious and NSFW.
Response from Facebook user Jane Smith: “I can’t believe we’re still talking about Kavanaugh in 2023, but these memes are a good reminder of just how ridiculous that whole situation was.”
The “Crying Kavanaugh” Meme
After Kavanaugh’s emotional outburst during the hearing, in which he tearfully denied the allegations of sexual assault against him, the internet quickly turned him into a meme. Photos of Kavanaugh crying were edited into various pop culture references, such as the “This is Fine” dog or the “I’m Not Mad, I’m Just Disappointed” mom.
Response from Instagram user @MemeQueen: “As someone who loves a good meme, I have to say the Crying Kavanaugh ones were some of the best. They were both funny and a little bit sad.”
The Legacy of the Kavanaugh Memes
While some people may view the Kavanaugh memes as simply a way to poke fun at a serious situation, others see them as a reflection of the power of humor to cope with difficult times. No matter what your perspective, there’s no denying that the Kavanaugh memes were a memorable part of internet culture in 2018 and beyond.
Response from Tumblr user @HumorIsHealing: “As someone who’s dealt with trauma, I think humor can be a really powerful coping mechanism. The Kavanaugh memes were a way for people to laugh in the face of something that was really upsetting.”
Conclusion
Whether you found the Kavanaugh memes hilarious or offensive, there’s no denying their impact on internet culture. Looking back on them in 2023, it’s clear that they were a product of their time, reflecting the political climate and the power of social media to shape public opinion. Who knows what the next big meme will be, but one thing’s for sure: we’ll be laughing about it for years to come.
