In 2023, a meme known as the “Soda City Funk” took the internet by storm. It all started with a video posted on Twitter by a user named @SodaCitySoul, showcasing a group of street performers dancing to funky music in the heart of Columbia, South Carolina. The video quickly went viral and spawned countless remixes, memes, and parodies.

The Birth of a Meme

The Soda City Funk meme was born on a hot summer day in Columbia, when @SodaCitySoul stumbled upon a group of street performers entertaining a small crowd with their funky moves. The performers were a mix of young and old, black and white, all united by their love of music and dance.

With his phone in hand, @SodaCitySoul recorded the performance and uploaded it to Twitter with the caption “Soda City Funk is alive and well!” Within hours, the video had thousands of likes, retweets, and comments.

The Meme Goes Viral

As the video spread across the internet, people started remixing it with different music and adding their own humorous captions. Some turned it into a dance challenge, while others used it to poke fun at different cities or cultural trends.

One popular remix featured the “Soda City Funk” dancers grooving to the tune of “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars. The remix went viral on TikTok and inspired countless others to create their own versions.

The Backlash

As with any viral meme, the Soda City Funk also faced its fair share of backlash. Some critics accused the meme of exploiting the performers and reducing their art to a cheap internet joke.

Others argued that the meme was disrespectful to Columbia and its local culture, as it portrayed the city as a one-dimensional caricature of funk music and street performance.

The Legacy of the Soda City Funk Meme

Despite the controversy, the Soda City Funk meme left a lasting impact on the internet and beyond. It inspired a new wave of interest in street performance and funk music, and brought attention to the cultural vibrancy of Columbia.

Many of the performers featured in the original video also gained a following and were able to monetize their art through social media and live performances.
