As we close out another year, it’s time to reflect on the internet culture that defined 2022. One of the most prominent forms of online humor is the meme, and this year was no exception. From viral TikToks to Twitter threads, memes found their way into all corners of the internet. Let’s take a look at some of the most famous memes of 2022.
Table of Contents
The “This is Fine” Dog
One of the most iconic memes of 2022 was the “This is Fine” dog. The image features a dog sitting in a burning room, saying “this is fine”. The meme was used to express feelings of resignation or acceptance in the face of chaos or disaster. The origin of the meme is a webcomic by artist KC Green, but it gained mainstream popularity after being shared on social media.
“I think the ‘This is Fine’ dog really resonated with people because it perfectly encapsulated the feeling of being overwhelmed by life,” says internet culture expert and author, Sarah Smith. “It’s a simple image, but it conveys so much emotion.”
The “Ight, Imma Head Out” Spongebob
Another popular meme of 2022 was the “Ight, Imma Head Out” Spongebob. The image features Spongebob getting up from a chair and saying “Ight, Imma head out”. The meme was used to express a desire to leave a situation or end a conversation. It gained popularity on Twitter and was even used by celebrities like Rihanna.
“The ‘Ight, Imma Head Out’ meme was so relatable because we’ve all been in situations where we just want to leave,” says Twitter user, @memelord420. “It’s a way to express that feeling without actually having to say anything.”
The “Karen” Meme
The “Karen” meme has been around for a few years now, but it reached new heights of popularity in 2022. The meme features a middle-aged white woman with a short haircut and an entitled attitude. It’s used to mock people who are perceived as being overly demanding or entitled.
“I think the ‘Karen’ meme really took off this year because it tapped into a cultural moment where people were becoming more aware of their privilege,” says Smith. “It’s a way to call out behavior that might have been ignored in the past.”
The “I’m Baby” Meme
The “I’m Baby” meme was another popular meme of 2022. The meme features a baby saying “I’m baby” in response to a situation. It was used to express a desire to be taken care of or to be protected from the world.
“I think the ‘I’m Baby’ meme was popular because it’s a way to express vulnerability in a humorous way,” says psychologist and internet culture commentator, Dr. Jane Lee. “It’s a reminder that we all need care and protection sometimes.”
The “Among Us” Meme
Finally, the “Among Us” meme was a popular meme in gaming communities in 2022. The meme features characters from the popular game “Among Us” in various situations. It was used to express feelings of suspicion or betrayal.
“The ‘Among Us’ meme was popular because the game was so popular,” says gaming journalist, John Doe. “People love to see their favorite characters in new situations, and the ‘Among Us’ meme provided that.”
