The Origin of the Rivalry
The Eagles and Falcons first played against each other in 1966, but it wasn’t until the 21st century that their rivalry truly began to take shape. In 2002, the Eagles defeated the Falcons in the NFC Championship Game, which led to a heated rematch in 2005. From that point on, every game between the two teams was highly anticipated and often resulted in intense battles on the field.
The Memes that Defined the Rivalry
The “Dirty Bird” Dance
One of the most iconic moments in this rivalry was when the Falcons did their “Dirty Bird” dance after scoring a touchdown. Eagles fans quickly turned this into a meme, creating images of Eagles players crushing the Falcons with their own dance moves. Fans from both sides had a lot of fun with this meme, and it’s one that has stood the test of time.
The “Philly Special” vs “Atlanta Flop”
In 2018, the Eagles and Falcons faced off again, and this time, the Eagles pulled off a trick play known as the “Philly Special” to score a touchdown. Falcons fans were quick to point out that the play was reminiscent of a similar play the Falcons ran in the Super Bowl a few years earlier. Eagles fans responded with memes calling the Falcons “Atlanta Flop” and pointing out that they couldn’t handle the pressure in big games.
The “Matt Ryan Face”
Another meme that Eagles fans had a lot of fun with was the “Matt Ryan Face.” This meme featured a photo of Ryan looking dejected on the sidelines, often with a caption poking fun at his performance against the Eagles. Falcons fans didn’t find this one quite as funny, but it was definitely a popular one among Eagles fans.
The Response from Fans
As with any rivalry, fans from both sides had a lot to say when it came to the memes. Some fans found them hilarious and a fun way to poke fun at the other team, while others felt that they went too far and were disrespectful. Here are a few comments from fans on both sides:
