It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a decade since Joseph Ducreux burst onto the meme scene with his hilarious, anachronistic portraits and witty captions. The French artist, who lived in the 18th century, became an unlikely viral sensation thanks to his unique blend of old-world elegance and contemporary humor. In this article, we’ll take a look back at some of the best Joseph Ducreux memes and explore why they continue to resonate with fans today.

The Origins of Joseph Ducreux

Before we dive into the memes themselves, let’s take a brief look at who Joseph Ducreux was and how he became an internet sensation. Born in 1735, Ducreux was a painter and engraver who achieved some success during his lifetime but was largely forgotten after his death in 1802. It wasn’t until the 21st century that his work gained a new audience thanks to the power of social media.

In 2009, a Redditor named Gyyp posted a portrait of Ducreux with the caption “Imma let you finish, but first I have to say…” The image, which showed Ducreux looking like a hip-hop artist, quickly went viral and spawned countless imitations. Soon, Ducreux’s name became synonymous with the style of portrait he was known for, which featured exaggerated expressions and elaborate clothing.

The Best Joseph Ducreux Memes

Now, let’s take a look at some of the most iconic Joseph Ducreux memes that have stood the test of time.

“Archaic Rap”

One of the earliest and most popular Ducreux memes was the “Archaic Rap” series, which featured captions that sounded like they could have been written by a rapper from the 21st century but were instead attributed to Ducreux. Examples include “It would appear that my flow is hotter than the sun” and “I must inquire as to the whereabouts of the gentleman known as Slim Shady.”

The combination of old-fashioned language and modern slang made these memes irresistible to fans of both history and hip-hop.

“What Sorcery Is This?”

Another popular Ducreux meme featured the artist himself looking bewildered or amazed by something he was seeing. The caption, “What sorcery is this?” became a catchphrase that could be applied to any situation where someone was surprised or impressed.

This meme was particularly versatile and was used to mock everything from new technology to political scandals.

“Haters Gonna Hate”

One of the most enduring Ducreux memes is the “Haters gonna hate” image, which shows the artist in a confident pose with the caption “Haters gonna hate.” This meme became a way for people to shrug off criticism or negativity and embrace their own uniqueness.

Even today, you can still find “Haters gonna hate” merchandise and references in pop culture.

Why Joseph Ducreux Memes Endure

So, why have Joseph Ducreux memes remained so popular long after their initial explosion on the internet? There are a few reasons.

First, Ducreux’s portraits are visually striking and memorable. The combination of his exaggerated expressions and elaborate clothing make for images that are both funny and aesthetically pleasing.

Second, the use of archaic language in the captions adds an extra layer of humor and irony. Fans of Ducreux memes enjoy the contrast between his old-fashioned persona and the modern references in the captions.

Finally, many of the memes have become so ubiquitous that they have taken on a life of their own. “Haters gonna hate” in particular has become a cultural touchstone that transcends its origins as a Joseph Ducreux meme.
