doom

It’s been almost a decade since the release of the critically acclaimed first-person shooter game, Doom Eternal. While the game itself has earned its place in gaming history, one particular phrase uttered by the game’s protagonist, the Doom Slayer, has also found its way into internet culture. We’re talking about the “But Doom is eternal” meme, a phrase that has become a staple in online discussions about anything that seems unending or unstoppable. Let’s take a closer look at the origins and the enduring popularity of this internet phenomenon.

Origins of the Meme

The “But Doom is eternal” meme originated from a line spoken by the Doom Slayer in the game’s story mode. In one of the cutscenes, the character VEGA expresses concern about the possibility of the demons returning, to which the Doom Slayer responds, “But we will be waiting for them. We always have been. For eons, we have survived. Made others sacrifice in the name of our prosperity. So that they may in turn find redemption. Who are you, a human, to defy our traditions?” VEGA then asks, “Doom Slayer, I require your assistance in-,” to which the Slayer interrupts and says, “No.” VEGA then replies, “But, but… Doom is eternal. And with each passing moment, the threat from the demons grows only stronger.” The Doom Slayer then delivers the now-famous line, “But Doom is eternal, and we will be waiting.”

From that moment on, the phrase “But Doom is eternal” has been used in a variety of contexts, both within and outside of the gaming community. It has become a way of expressing the idea that no matter what happens, something will always endure, whether it’s a person, a concept, or a cultural phenomenon.

The Appeal of the Meme

The “But Doom is eternal” meme has struck a chord with many people for several reasons. First, it taps into a primal human desire for survival and perseverance. The idea that no matter what happens, something will endure is comforting to many people, especially in times of uncertainty and turmoil.

Second, the phrase has a certain grandiosity to it that people find appealing. The idea of something being eternal is both awe-inspiring and intimidating, and the use of the word “Doom” adds an element of drama and danger to the phrase.

Finally, the “But Doom is eternal” meme has become popular simply because it’s funny. The absurdity of using a line from a video game about killing demons in everyday conversations is not lost on people, and the phrase has inspired countless memes, jokes, and parodies.

Responses to the Meme

Like any popular internet meme, the “But Doom is eternal” meme has elicited a variety of responses from people who are both familiar and unfamiliar with it. Some people have embraced the phrase as a way of expressing their own resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
