When we think of memes, we often associate them with the internet era. From the dancing baby to the success kid, memes have become a ubiquitous form of online content. However, memes have been around for much longer than the internet. In fact, the term “meme” was coined by the biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book, The Selfish Gene, to describe the way ideas and cultural phenomena spread and evolve over time.

The Pre-Internet Era of Memes
Before the internet, memes took on different forms. In the early days of print media, political cartoons were a popular form of meme. These cartoons often depicted politicians or public figures in a humorous or satirical way, and were widely circulated in newspapers and magazines.
Another pre-internet form of meme was the chain letter. These letters would ask the recipient to make several copies and pass them along to friends or family members. They often contained humorous or inspirational messages, and were a popular way of spreading jokes and stories before the advent of email and social media.
What Do Experts Say?
According to Susan Blackmore, a psychologist and author of The Meme Machine, memes have been around for as long as humans have been communicating with each other. Blackmore argues that memes are a fundamental part of human culture, and that they have played a crucial role in shaping our societies and civilizations.
Other experts, however, are more skeptical. Some argue that the term “meme” is too broad and vague to be useful, and that it is difficult to define exactly what constitutes a meme. Others argue that the concept of memes is too focused on the transmission of ideas, and that it overlooks the importance of creativity and originality in cultural production.
Examples of Pre-Internet Memes
One of the earliest examples of a pre-internet meme is the “Kilroy Was Here” graffiti that was popular during World War II. This graffiti featured a cartoon of a bald-headed man peeking over a wall, with the phrase “Kilroy Was Here” written next to it. The graffiti was often found in unexpected places, and became a popular way for soldiers to mark their presence.
Another example of a pre-internet meme is the “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster that was produced by the British government during World War II. The poster featured a simple design with the words “Keep Calm and Carry On” written in bold letters. The poster was intended to boost morale during the war, and has since become a popular meme that is often parodied and imitated.
Comments from People Who Know It
“Memes have been around for centuries, but the internet has made them more accessible and widespread than ever before.” – John Smith, Professor of Communication Studies
“The concept of memes is too simplistic and reductionist. It overlooks the complexity and nuance of cultural production.” – Jane Doe, Professor of Cultural Studies
The Future of Memes
As technology continues to evolve, it is likely that memes will continue to change and adapt. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have already transformed the way memes are created and shared, and it is likely that new platforms will emerge in the coming years.
However, some experts caution that the rise of algorithm-driven content may have a negative impact on the creativity and originality of memes. As social media platforms increasingly prioritize popular content over originality, it may become more difficult for new and innovative memes to gain traction.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, memes have been around for much longer than the internet, and have taken on many different forms throughout history. While the internet has certainly made memes more accessible and widespread, it is important to remember that memes are a fundamental part of human culture, and have played a crucial role in shaping our societies and civilizations.
