It’s no secret that memes have become an integral part of internet culture. From the iconic “I Can Has Cheezburger?” to the more recent “This Is Fine” comic, memes have been used to express emotions, share ideas, and even provide social commentary. But in 2023, a new type of meme started gaining traction: the anticlimactic meme.

What is an Anticlimactic Meme?
An anticlimactic meme is a meme that subverts expectations. It typically follows a setup that leads the viewer to believe something exciting or unexpected is about to happen, only to have the punchline be a non-event or something completely underwhelming.
For example, a popular anticlimactic meme from 2023 featured a video of a cat slowly creeping up on a bird sitting on a fence. The music builds up, the tension is palpable, and just as the cat is about to pounce… it simply walks away. The punchline is unexpected and hilarious precisely because it goes against what we expect to happen.
The Appeal of Anticlimactic Memes
So why are anticlimactic memes so popular? One reason is that they play into our love of surprise and subversion. We’re used to seeing memes that follow predictable patterns, so when a meme goes against the grain, it catches our attention.
Another reason is that anticlimactic memes can be used in a wide variety of contexts. They can be used to make fun of pop culture tropes, to poke fun at political events, or simply to provide a moment of levity in our everyday lives.
The Origins of Anticlimactic Memes
While it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when anticlimactic memes started gaining popularity, some credit the trend to a viral tweet from comedian Demi Adejuyigbe. In the tweet, Adejuyigbe posted a video of himself dancing to Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” every year on September 21st. However, in 2023, he posted a video of himself simply sitting on a couch and doing nothing. The tweet went viral, and soon, others were creating their own anticlimactic videos.
The Future of Anticlimactic Memes
As with any internet trend, it’s difficult to predict how long anticlimactic memes will remain popular. However, as long as people continue to appreciate surprise and subversion, it’s likely that we’ll continue to see these types of memes popping up online.
