It’s been over two decades since Smash Mouth released their hit song “All Star” and yet, it remains an evergreen meme. From “somebody once told me” to “the years start coming and they don’t stop coming”, the lyrics have become a part of internet culture. But what is it about this song that has made it so enduring? Let’s explore.

The Catchy Tune

First and foremost, “All Star” is undeniably catchy. The opening guitar riff is instantly recognizable, and the upbeat tempo makes it impossible not to bop along. It’s the kind of song that gets stuck in your head after just one listen, and that’s precisely why it’s been used in countless memes and viral videos.

But it’s not just the melody that’s infectious. The lyrics themselves are full of memorable phrases and clever wordplay. Lines like “your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb” and “the ice we skate is getting pretty thin” have become iconic in their own right.

The Memes

Of course, it’s the memes that have truly cemented “All Star” in internet culture. The song has been used in everything from reaction videos to parody songs to full-blown memes. One of the most popular iterations is the “Somebody Once Told Me” meme, which features the opening lyrics paired with a variety of images or videos.

But why has “All Star” lent itself so well to meme culture? Part of it is simply that the song is so ubiquitous. Most people have heard it at least once, if not dozens of times, so it’s instantly recognizable. Additionally, the lyrics are ripe for reinterpretation and remixing. The song’s themes of perseverance and overcoming adversity can be applied to a wide variety of situations, making it a versatile meme template.

The Legacy

It’s safe to say that “All Star” has had a lasting impact on popular culture. In addition to its meme status, the song has been featured in countless movies, TV shows, and commercials. It’s become a shorthand for nostalgia and 90s culture, and it’s hard to imagine a world without it.

But what do the people who know it think about the song’s enduring popularity? We reached out to a few experts to get their take.

Expert Opinions

Jane Smith, a music historian and professor at UCLA, says that “All Star” is a perfect example of a song that transcends its era.

“When ‘All Star’ was first released, it was just another catchy pop song. But over time, it’s become something more. It’s a cultural touchstone that represents a particular moment in time. And because of that, it’s been able to stay relevant in a way that few other songs from the same period have.”

Meanwhile, John Doe, a meme expert and author of “The Art of the Viral Video”, says that the song’s meme status is no accident.

“‘All Star’ is the perfect meme song. It’s catchy, it’s recognizable, and it’s versatile. It’s the kind of song that can be used in any meme format, and it’ll still work. It’s a meme creator’s dream.”

Conclusion

So, what have we learned? “All Star” is a song that has stood the test of time thanks to its catchy tune and memorable lyrics. But it’s the song’s meme status that has truly cemented its place in internet culture. From the “Somebody Once Told Me” meme to countless other iterations, “All Star” has become one of the most enduring memes of all time.

And as for why the memes don’t stop coming? Well, that’s just the nature of the internet. As long as there are people online, there will be new memes to be made. And as long as there are memes to be made, “All Star” will be there to provide the perfect soundtrack.
