chains

Back in the early 2010s, a meme took the internet by storm. It was the era of “Chains and Whips Excite Me,” a phrase that became popularized by the hit song “S&M” by Rihanna. The meme featured the singer’s lyrics overlaid on images of people in various situations, often with a sexual connotation. The meme was both loved and hated, and it became a cultural phenomenon that lasted for years. In this article, we’ll take a look back at the “Chains and Whips Excite Me” meme and its impact on internet culture.

The Origins of the Meme

The “Chains and Whips Excite Me” meme started in 2011, shortly after the release of Rihanna’s song “S&M.” The song’s lyrics include the line “chains and whips excite me,” which quickly became a catchphrase among fans. The meme itself was born when someone decided to overlay the phrase on top of a picture and share it on social media. The image quickly went viral, and others began creating their own versions of the meme.

The meme’s popularity was due in part to the shock value of the phrase. “Chains and whips” are not typically associated with mainstream pop music, so the inclusion of the phrase in Rihanna’s song was attention-grabbing. The meme took that shock value to the next level by putting the phrase in unexpected situations, such as on top of a picture of a cat or a baby. The contrast between the innocent image and the suggestive phrase made the meme even more amusing to some.

The Backlash Against the Meme

As with any popular trend, there were those who didn’t appreciate the “Chains and Whips Excite Me” meme. Some felt that the sexual nature of the phrase was inappropriate for all ages, while others thought that it was simply overplayed. Critics argued that the meme was sexist and that it perpetuated harmful stereotypes about women and sexuality. Some also felt that the meme was insensitive to those who have experienced abuse or trauma.

Despite the backlash, the meme continued to thrive. It was shared on social media, turned into merchandise, and even referenced in popular TV shows and movies. The phrase “chains and whips” became a part of the cultural lexicon, and even those who didn’t know the origin of the meme were familiar with the phrase.

The End of the Meme

Like all trends, the “Chains and Whips Excite Me” meme eventually ran its course. By the mid-2010s, the meme was no longer as popular as it had been in its heyday. People had moved on to other memes, and the shock value of the phrase had worn off. Today, the meme is largely forgotten, except among those who remember it fondly.
