In 2023, we take a trip down memory lane to reflect on one of the most infamous moments in Seattle Seahawks history – the 2016 wildcard game against the Minnesota Vikings, where kicker Blair Walsh missed a crucial field goal that ultimately cost the Seahawks the game. While the loss was devastating for Seattle fans, it also gave rise to a plethora of memes that have lived on long after the game.
The Origin of the Memes
As soon as the missed field goal occurred, fans took to social media to express their disappointment and frustration. However, it wasn’t long before those initial reactions turned into hilarious memes that spread like wildfire. Some of the most popular memes featured Walsh’s face superimposed onto various images, such as a crying Michael Jordan or a Titanic scene with Walsh as Rose and the field goal posts as Jack.
The memes quickly caught on and were shared by fans across the country. Even Walsh himself couldn’t escape them, as he was bombarded with memes on his own social media accounts.
The Impact of the Memes
While the memes were certainly entertaining, they also had a real impact on the Seahawks organization. For one, the memes kept the loss fresh in the minds of fans long after the game had ended. This meant that the team had to deal with constant reminders of the defeat, which could be demoralizing for players and coaches alike.
Additionally, the memes put a spotlight on the team’s kicking struggles, which had been a recurring issue throughout the season. This forced the Seahawks to address the issue head-on and make changes to their kicking personnel going forward.
The Legacy of the Memes
Despite the negative impact the memes may have had on the Seahawks, they have also become a beloved part of the team’s lore. Fans continue to share and create new Blair Walsh memes to this day, and the kicker’s name has become synonymous with missed field goals in Seattle.
Even Walsh himself has embraced the memes, appearing in a parody video for the comedy website Funny or Die in 2017. In the video, Walsh pokes fun at himself and the missed field goal, showing that he can laugh at his own mistakes.
