before

For decades, students of the English language have been taught the rule “i before e except after c.” However, with the rise of the internet and the prevalence of memes, a new twist has been added to this rule: “i before e except after c, or when sounding like ‘a’ as in ‘neighbor’ or ‘weigh.'” This new version of the rule has taken on a life of its own, spreading through social media and becoming a popular meme format.

The Origins of the Rule

The original “i before e except after c” rule has been around for centuries and is meant to help people remember the correct spelling of words that contain these two letters in sequence. The idea is that “ie” should come before “ei” in most cases, except when the “c” makes an “s” sound, as in “receive” or “ceiling.”

While the rule is helpful in many cases, there are also plenty of exceptions, such as “weird,” “their,” and “foreign.” As a result, some people argue that the rule is not very useful and should be abandoned altogether.

The Rise of the Meme

Despite its flaws, the “i before e except after c” rule has taken on a new life in the form of internet memes. These memes often feature a play on words that highlights the rule, such as “i before e, except after c, or when sounding like ‘a’ as in ‘neighbor’ or ‘weigh,’ and weekends and holidays and all throughout May, and you’ll always be wrong no matter what you say.”

The format has become so popular that there are now entire websites and social media accounts dedicated to sharing “i before e” memes. Some people even use the memes as a way to teach the rule to others, arguing that the humor and clever wordplay help make the rule more memorable.

Criticism and Controversy

While many people find the “i before e except after c” memes amusing, others have criticized them for perpetuating a rule that is ultimately flawed and not very useful. Some linguists argue that the rule is based on outdated ideas about pronunciation and etymology, and that there are simply too many exceptions to make it a reliable guide for spelling.

Others have also pointed out that the rule is often misused or misunderstood, leading to even more confusion. For example, some people mistakenly believe that the rule applies to all words that contain “ie” or “ei,” regardless of the pronunciation or spelling.

Expert Opinions

To get a sense of how linguists and language experts feel about the “i before e except after c” rule and its meme-ification, we reached out to a few experts for their thoughts.

Dr. Anne Curzan, Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan:

“I am not a fan of the ‘i before e except after c’ rule. It’s too often wrong, and too often taught as a ‘rule’ rather than a guideline. That said, it’s fascinating to see how it has taken on a new life as a meme, and it’s a good example of how language rules can be playful and creative.”

Dr. Geoffrey Pullum, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh:

“The ‘i before e except after c’ rule is a classic example of a fake rule that has been passed down through the generations. It’s based on a misunderstanding of how English spelling works, and it’s a shame that so many people continue to teach it as if it were true. The memes are amusing, but they don’t do much to dispel the myth.”

Dr. Gretchen McCulloch, Linguist and Host of the “Lingthusiasm” Podcast:

“The ‘i before e except after c’ rule is a great example of how English spelling is often more complicated than we think it is. While the rule can be helpful in some cases, it’s important to remember that there are plenty of exceptions, and that spelling is ultimately a matter of convention rather than hard and fast rules. The memes are fun, but they shouldn’t be taken too seriously.”

In Conclusion

The “i before e except after c unless” meme has become a popular way to play with language and poke fun at the quirks of English spelling. While the rule itself may be flawed and outdated, the memes serve as a reminder that language is always evolving and that we can find humor and creativity in even the most mundane of rules.
