It’s 2023 and the world is still obsessed with memes. From funny cat videos to political satire, memes have become an integral part of internet culture. And now, even philosophy has found its way into the world of memes, with St. Augustine memes taking the internet by storm.

Who Was St. Augustine?

Before we dive into the world of St. Augustine memes, let’s take a quick look at who he was. St. Augustine was a philosopher and theologian who lived in the 4th and 5th centuries AD. He is known for his writings on the nature of God, the human soul, and the problem of evil. His most famous work, Confessions, is an autobiographical account of his spiritual journey.

The Rise of St. Augustine Memes

So, how did St. Augustine become the subject of internet memes? It all started with a Facebook group called “Augustine Memes for Reformed Teens,” which was created in 2018. The group’s goal was to share funny memes that related to St. Augustine’s teachings and to engage in theological discussions.

Soon, the group grew in popularity and spawned numerous spin-off groups, each with their own unique take on St. Augustine memes. The memes range from lighthearted jokes to clever references to his philosophical ideas.

The Appeal of St. Augustine Memes

So, what is it about St. Augustine that makes him such a popular subject for memes? According to members of the Facebook group, it’s his relatable nature. Despite being a philosopher and theologian from centuries ago, St. Augustine’s writings touch on universal themes that are still relevant today.

Additionally, his personal struggles and spiritual journey make him a relatable figure for many people. His writings on the problem of evil, for example, resonate with those who have experienced suffering or hardship in their own lives.

The Best St. Augustine Memes

Of course, the best way to understand the appeal of St. Augustine memes is to see them for yourself. Here are a few examples:

1. The Confessions Meme

This meme features a picture of St. Augustine with the caption, “When you realize you’ve been sinning for 33 years and it’s time to write a book about it.”

2. The Free Will Meme

This meme features a picture of St. Augustine with the caption, “When you believe in free will, but also believe in predestination.”

3. The Original Sin Meme

This meme features a picture of a baby with the caption, “When you realize you were born with Original Sin and didn’t even do anything.”

The Future of St. Augustine Memes

So, what does the future hold for St. Augustine memes? According to members of the Facebook group, the possibilities are endless. As long as people continue to find humor and meaning in his writings, St. Augustine will remain a popular subject for memes.

Some members even believe that St. Augustine memes could lead to a renewed interest in his philosophical ideas. By making his teachings accessible and relatable through humor, they hope to spark a new generation of thinkers and theologians.

Responses from St. Augustine Scholars

But what do scholars of St. Augustine think about the rise of St. Augustine memes? Some have expressed concern that the memes trivialize his ideas and reduce him to a caricature. Others, however, see the memes as a way to engage with a wider audience and make his ideas more accessible.

Dr. Susan Wessel, a professor of theology at The Catholic University of America, says, “While it’s important to take St. Augustine’s ideas seriously, I think it’s also valuable to find new ways to engage with them. If memes are a way to introduce people to his ideas and spark their curiosity, then that’s a good thing.”

Overall, it seems that St. Augustine memes are here to stay. Whether you’re a fan of philosophy or just looking for a good laugh, there’s something for everyone in the world of St. Augustine memes.
