Since its inception in the early 2000s, the “arms of an angel” meme has undergone a remarkable transformation. What once started as a touching tribute to Sarah McLachlan’s famous song has now become a ubiquitous internet joke. In this article, we’ll explore the history of the meme and how it has evolved over the years.
The Origins of the Meme
The “arms of an angel” meme originated in a 2004 commercial for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The ad featured McLachlan’s song “Angel” and showed images of abused and neglected animals. The commercial was a huge success, raising millions of dollars for the ASPCA and earning McLachlan a Grammy nomination.
However, the commercial also became the subject of parody and satire. People began making their own versions of the ad, replacing the images of animals with humorous or absurd content. This led to the birth of the “arms of an angel” meme.
The Rise of the Meme
As the internet grew in popularity, so did the “arms of an angel” meme. It became a staple of online humor, appearing on blogs, forums, and social media sites. People used the meme to make fun of everything from politics to pop culture.
One of the most popular variations of the meme involved replacing the animals in the original commercial with bizarre or ridiculous images. For example, people would use images of celebrities, cartoon characters, or even inanimate objects. This created a new level of absurdity and humor that resonated with internet users.
The Legacy of the Meme
Today, the “arms of an angel” meme is still going strong. While it may not be as popular as it once was, it still has a dedicated following. Many people continue to use the meme to make fun of current events and popular culture.
However, there are also those who feel that the meme has lost its original meaning. Some people argue that the meme is no longer a tribute to the animals in the ASPCA commercial, but rather a cheap joke at their expense.
