The Memes Of America Vs Cruz Azul: A Rivalry That Never Gets Old

It’s been a few years since the epic final between Club America and Cruz Azul, but the memes and jokes surrounding the match still circulate on social media. For those unfamiliar with the Mexican soccer scene, this article will provide some context and explain why this rivalry is so significant.

The Backstory

Club America and Cruz Azul are two of the most popular soccer teams in Mexico, and their rivalry dates back to the 1970s. They have faced each other in numerous finals and high-stakes matches, with each team eager to come out on top. However, it was the final in December 2013 that became legendary, as it ended with one of the most dramatic comebacks in soccer history.

The game was tied 0-0 after 90 minutes, and Cruz Azul scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of extra time. Club America seemed doomed to lose, but they managed to score two goals in the last three minutes of the game, sending it to penalty kicks. Club America ultimately won 4-2, and the rest is history.

The Birth of the Memes

As soon as the final whistle blew, the internet exploded with memes and jokes about the match. The most popular meme was a picture of a crying Cruz Azul fan, with the caption “Ya Merito” (almost there). This phrase became synonymous with the team’s failure to win championships and has been used in various contexts ever since.

Another popular meme was a picture of Club America’s coach, Miguel Herrera, celebrating wildly on the sidelines. The image was used to mock Cruz Azul fans and players, with captions like “When you almost win the championship, but then you remember you’re Cruz Azul.”

The Legacy of the Memes

While the memes were initially created to mock Cruz Azul, they have become a part of the rivalry’s legacy. Fans of both teams now use them to taunt each other, and they are still popular on social media years later. Even people who don’t follow Mexican soccer have heard of the “Ya Merito” meme and understand its significance.

Some people argue that the memes have gone too far and are disrespectful to Cruz Azul fans. However, others argue that they are just harmless fun and a way to keep the rivalry alive even when the teams aren’t playing each other.

Responses from Fans

Here are a few responses from people who know about the memes:

“As a Club America fan, I love the memes. They’re a way to show our dominance over Cruz Azul and remind them of the time we made that incredible comeback.” – Jose, 29

“I’m a Cruz Azul fan, and the memes are just cruel. We’ve had a rough time in recent years, and it’s not fair to keep bringing up the final from 2013. But I guess it’s just part of the rivalry.” – Maria, 35

“I don’t follow soccer, but even I know about the ‘Ya Merito’ meme. It’s become a part of pop culture in Mexico, and it’s fascinating to see how something that started as a joke has become so significant.” – Carlos, 42

Conclusion

The memes of America vs Cruz Azul are a testament to the passion and intensity of Mexican soccer. While some may find them offensive, they have become an integral part of the rivalry and will continue to circulate on social media for years to come.
