The Resurgence of Classic Memes
One of the most notable trends in 2021 was the resurgence of classic memes, some of which had been around for years. These memes, which had once been popular and then faded into obscurity, were brought back to life by a new generation of internet users.
For example, the “distracted boyfriend” meme, which first became popular in 2017, saw a resurgence in 2021. This meme involves a stock photo of a man checking out another woman while walking with his girlfriend. The photo was given a humorous twist with captions that poked fun at the man’s wandering eye.
“It’s funny to see how the classics never really go out of style,” says meme expert and social media influencer, Karen Smith. “People love to revisit old memes and put a new spin on them.”
The Emergence of New and Innovative Memes
As always, 2021 also saw the birth of new and innovative memes that quickly became viral sensations. One such meme was the “Woman Yelling at a Cat” meme, which features an image of a woman screaming at a cat sitting at a dinner table.
The meme quickly became popular on social media, with users creating various iterations of the original picture. “The ‘Woman Yelling at a Cat’ meme was a perfect example of how something simple can become so popular,” says Smith. “It just goes to show that memes can come from anywhere and be about anything.”
The Impact of the Pandemic on Meme Culture
2021 was a year dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and memes were no exception. Many memes revolved around the pandemic and the various ways in which people coped with it.
“The pandemic had a significant impact on meme culture, with many memes focusing on the various challenges people faced during the pandemic,” says Smith. “Memes provided a way for people to cope with the uncertainty and anxiety of the pandemic and find humor in a difficult situation.”
The Rise of Zoom Memes
One of the most notable pandemic-related trends in meme culture was the rise of Zoom memes. With so many people working and studying from home, Zoom became a staple of daily life for many. As a result, memes poking fun at Zoom became incredibly popular.
“Zoom memes were a way for people to connect over a shared experience,” says Smith. “They provided a way for people to laugh at the quirks and frustrations of virtual meetings and classes.”
Looking Ahead
As we move into 2022, it’s clear that memes will continue to play an important role in internet culture. With new trends emerging and old ones being revisited, there’s always something to laugh about.
“Memes are a reflection of our culture and our society,” says Smith. “They provide a way for us to connect, to laugh, and to find common ground. I think we’ll continue to see memes evolve and change as our culture evolves and changes.”
So, whether you’re a die-hard meme fan or just someone who enjoys a good laugh, there’s no doubt that 2021 was a year filled with humor, laughter, and plenty of viral funnies.
