In 2023, it’s hard to imagine a time when memes were not an integral part of our daily lives. But back in 2017, a meme featuring Winona Ryder at the Screen Actors Guild Awards took the internet by storm. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit this iconic moment that still resonates with people today.

The Origins of the Meme

It all started when Winona Ryder was standing on stage with the cast of Stranger Things to accept their award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. As her co-star David Harbour delivered an impassioned speech, Ryder’s face went through a range of emotions that were captured by the cameras. Her expressions were a mix of confusion, disbelief, and excitement, and they quickly became fodder for internet memes.

The meme was shared on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and it featured Ryder’s various expressions with captions that poked fun at different situations. For example, one popular caption was “When you’re supposed to be working but you accidentally open Twitter.” Another one said, “When you realize it’s Monday tomorrow.”

The Impact of the Meme

The Winona Ryder Sag Awards meme became so popular that it spawned countless variations and spin-offs. It also sparked a renewed interest in Ryder’s career, as people began to revisit some of her most iconic films like Beetlejuice, Heathers, and Edward Scissorhands. The meme was a testament to Ryder’s enduring popularity and her ability to connect with people across generations.

Many celebrities also weighed in on the meme, with some even creating their own versions. The actress Busy Philipps posted a photo of herself making the same expressions as Ryder, while the comedian Patton Oswalt tweeted, “I want Winona Ryder to be the official face of ‘Oh, shit, I completely lost track of what I was saying’.”

The Legacy of the Meme

Although the Winona Ryder Sag Awards meme is now several years old, it still holds a special place in the hearts of many internet users. It’s a reminder of a simpler time when memes were not yet a science, and they were created and shared purely for the fun of it. The meme also shows how a single moment can capture the imagination of millions and become a cultural touchstone.

But perhaps the most enduring legacy of the meme is the way it has redefined our relationship with celebrities. In the past, celebrities were often seen as untouchable and distant figures. But the Winona Ryder Sag Awards meme showed that even the biggest stars can have relatable and human moments. It humanized celebrities in a way that was previously unthinkable, and it paved the way for memes that would go on to redefine our understanding of celebrity culture.
