The Origin of Memes
The term “meme” was coined by Richard Dawkins in his book, “The Selfish Gene” in 1976. Dawkins defined memes as cultural units of information that can be transmitted from one individual to another. In other words, memes are ideas that spread through social networks, just like viruses.
Initially, memes were seen as a niche phenomenon, limited to internet forums and subcultures. However, with the rise of social media platforms, memes have become mainstream and have infiltrated popular culture.
Where Do People Get Memes From?
Social Media Platforms
Social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are the primary sources of memes. Users create and share memes through these platforms, and they become viral if they resonate with a large number of people.
Instagram, in particular, has become a hub for meme creators. There are several pages dedicated to sharing memes, and users can follow these pages to get a daily dose of humor. Similarly, Twitter has become a platform for political memes, and Facebook is still a popular platform for meme sharing.
Meme Generator Websites
Meme generator websites also play a significant role in the creation and dissemination of memes. These websites provide users with templates and tools to create their memes. Users can add their captions and images to these templates and share them on social media platforms.
One of the most popular meme generator websites is Imgflip. The website has a vast collection of memes, and users can create their memes with ease. Similarly, websites like Meme Creator and Make a Meme are also popular among meme creators.
Reddit is an online forum where users can share content and engage in discussions. The platform has several subreddits dedicated to memes, and users can find the latest memes on these subreddits.
