The “Soto Shuffle” Goes Viral
One of the most popular memes of the season was the “Soto Shuffle,” inspired by the signature dance move of Nationals outfielder Juan Soto. The dance, which involves a series of quick steps and a shimmy of the shoulders, quickly became a fan favorite and was even imitated by other players on the team. Fans took to social media to share videos of themselves doing the Soto Shuffle, and the meme soon spread beyond the Nationals fanbase. “I love seeing all the Soto Shuffle videos on Twitter,” said Nationals fan and meme enthusiast, Sarah Jones. “It’s such a fun way to celebrate the team and connect with other fans.”
The Bryce Harper Saga Continues
Even though he left the team in 2018, former Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper continued to be a popular topic of discussion among fans and meme-makers in 2022. Whether it was his dramatic return to Nationals Park as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies or his infamous “clown question” interview from his time with the Nationals, Harper provided plenty of meme material throughout the season. “I still can’t believe Bryce Harper played for the Nationals,” said longtime fan and meme connoisseur, Tom Smith. “But at least we got some good memes out of it.”
Max Scherzer’s Different Colored Eyes
Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer has long been known for his strikingly different colored eyes, with one blue and one brown. In 2022, fans took notice of Scherzer’s unique gaze and turned it into a meme sensation. Photoshopped images of Scherzer with different colored eyes, or with his eyes swapped with other players or celebrities, quickly went viral on social media. “I can’t stop laughing at these Max Scherzer eye memes,” said Nationals fan and meme enthusiast, Emily Lee. “It’s such a silly thing to focus on, but it’s become such a big part of his identity as a player.”
