“Memento Vivere” is a Latin phrase that translates to “remember to live” in English. It’s a powerful reminder to make the most of every moment and live life to the fullest. In today’s fast-paced world, where we’re constantly bombarded with distractions and stress, it’s easy to forget to slow down and appreciate the beauty of life. But “memento vivere” reminds us to do just that.

The Origins of “Memento Vivere”

The phrase “memento vivere” has its roots in ancient Roman philosophy. The Stoics, a school of philosophy that originated in Greece and was popularized in Rome, believed in living in the present moment and making the most of life. They saw death as a natural and inevitable part of life, and believed that by living in accordance with nature and being mindful of our mortality, we could live more fulfilling lives.

The phrase “memento mori,” which translates to “remember you must die,” was a common Stoic mantra. It was a reminder that our time on this earth is limited, and that we should make the most of every moment. “Memento vivere,” then, can be seen as the positive counterpart to “memento mori.” It’s a reminder to not just remember our mortality, but to also remember to live.

What “Memento Vivere” Means Today

We’re constantly connected to technology and social media, and it’s easy to get caught up in the stress and anxiety of daily life. But “memento vivere” reminds us to slow down, disconnect, and appreciate the simple things in life.

For some, “memento vivere” may mean traveling to new places, trying new foods, or pursuing a new hobby. For others, it may mean spending more time with loved ones, taking a break from work, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of solitude.
