The Incident
The incident that sparked the Twisted Tea meme occurred in a convenience store in Ohio. A man was captured on video using a racial slur against another customer, who responded by smacking him in the face with a can of Twisted Tea. The video quickly went viral, with many people applauding the customer for standing up to racism. But it wasn’t just the incident itself that captured people’s attention. It was the way the man was hit with the can, and the sound it made, that lent itself perfectly to being turned into a meme.
The Meme
The Twisted Tea meme takes the original video and remixes it into countless variations. In most versions of the meme, the sound of the can hitting the man’s face is looped over and over again, often synced up to music or other videos. The meme has been used to express a wide range of emotions, from frustration and anger to joy and excitement. Some memes even feature the can of Twisted Tea as a character in its own right, with the can being animated or photoshopped into other situations.
Why it Went Viral
Like most memes, the Twisted Tea meme went viral because it resonated with a wide audience. The original video captured a moment of catharsis, as someone stood up to racism in a very direct way. The meme takes that moment and amplifies it, turning it into a form of entertainment that people can enjoy and share with others. The sound of the can hitting the man’s face is visceral and satisfying, and the endless variations of the meme mean that there’s always something new to discover.
Responses to the Meme
The Twisted Tea meme has been widely embraced by internet culture, with thousands of people creating their own versions of the meme and sharing them on social media. Many people have praised the meme for its cathartic qualities, with some even describing it as a form of justice porn. Others have criticized the meme for glorifying violence, arguing that it’s never okay to physically assault someone, even if they use racist language. Still, others have pointed out that the meme is a reflection of the deep-seated racial tensions in American society, and that it’s important to continue having conversations about racism and discrimination.
Conclusion
The Twisted Tea meme is a prime example of how internet culture can take a viral moment and turn it into a phenomenon. While the original video captured a moment of intense emotion, the meme takes that emotion and turns it into a form of entertainment. Whether you love it or hate it, the Twisted Tea meme is here to stay, at least for a little while longer.
