By now, you’ve probably come across a mind trick meme or two on your social media feed. These viral images and videos use clever wordplay, optical illusions, and other tricks to mess with our brains and make us question what we see. But what exactly are mind trick memes, and why are they so popular?

What are Mind Trick Memes?

Mind trick memes are a type of internet meme that plays with our perception and cognition. They often use visual illusions, wordplay, and other techniques to create an effect that is surprising, confusing, or even unsettling. Some mind trick memes are simple and straightforward, while others require more careful observation to understand.

One of the most popular types of mind trick memes is the “When You See It” meme. These images appear to be ordinary at first glance, but upon closer inspection, there is something hidden or unexpected in the picture. For example, a photo of a group of friends might contain a hidden figure or message that is only visible if you look closely.

Why Do We Love Mind Trick Memes?

There are several reasons why mind trick memes have become so popular in recent years. For one, they are often funny and entertaining. We enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out what’s going on in the image or video, and the surprise or “aha” moment when we finally do.

Additionally, mind trick memes are a form of social currency. Sharing a mind trick meme that others haven’t seen yet can make us feel clever or in-the-know. It’s a way to show off our knowledge or sense of humor, and to connect with others who enjoy the same types of content.

How Do Mind Trick Memes Work?

There are several techniques that mind trick memes use to mess with our brains. One common technique is anamorphosis, which is a type of optical illusion that distorts an image in such a way that it appears normal when viewed from a certain angle. For example, a painting might look like a jumbled mess up close, but when viewed from a specific spot, it reveals a clear image.

Another technique is forced perspective, which involves manipulating the distance and angle of objects in a picture to create an illusion of depth or size. This is often used in photographs to make people or objects appear larger or smaller than they actually are.

What Do Experts Say About Mind Trick Memes?

While mind trick memes are primarily a form of entertainment, they also offer some insights into the workings of the human brain. According to Dr. Stephen Macknik, a neuroscientist at the State University of New York, mind trick memes “hijack” our visual processing system by presenting us with an image or video that doesn’t quite fit our expectations.

“When our brains encounter something that doesn’t make sense, they work overtime to try to make sense of it,” Macknik explains. “This can lead to a feeling of satisfaction when we finally figure out what’s going on, which is why mind trick memes can be so addictive.”

How to Create Your Own Mind Trick Memes

Are you interested in creating your own mind trick memes? There are several online tools and resources that can help. One popular tool is the “When You See It” generator, which allows you to upload an image and add hidden elements for others to find.

When creating your own mind trick memes, it’s important to keep in mind that less is often more. The best mind trick memes are those that are simple and easy to understand, but still manage to surprise or delight the viewer in some way.
