Where Did It Come From?
Like many memes, the origins of the Safe Baseball meme are a bit murky. It seems to have first appeared on Twitter in 2016, posted by a user named @Kazuto_Yamazaki. The photo used in the meme is of Oakland A’s player Eric Sogard sliding into second base during a game against the Texas Rangers in 2013. The photo was taken by Getty Images photographer Ronald Martinez.
From there, the meme started to spread. Other Twitter users began using the photo with the “Safe!” caption, and it quickly made its way to other social media platforms like Instagram and Reddit. It’s even been used in mainstream media, with ESPN using the meme in their coverage of a 2019 game between the Houston Astros and the Seattle Mariners.
Why Has It Become So Popular?
So what is it about the Safe Baseball meme that has made it so popular? For one thing, it’s simple and easy to understand. Anyone who’s ever watched a baseball game can appreciate the humor in a player being called safe when it’s obvious they’re not. Plus, the meme can be used in a variety of situations, not just in reference to baseball. It’s become a catch-all meme for situations where someone is clearly in the wrong but is somehow declared “safe.”
Another reason for the meme’s popularity is its versatility. The photo used in the meme is of Eric Sogard, a relatively unknown player. This means that the meme can be used by fans of any team, as it’s not tied to any particular player or franchise. It’s a meme for all of baseball, not just one team or player.
What Do People Think About It?
The Safe Baseball meme has been met with mostly positive reactions from fans and players alike. Many people appreciate the humor in the meme and have used it themselves in various situations. Some players have even embraced the meme, with Eric Sogard himself tweeting about it in 2019.
“I love it. It’s been fun to see it take off and see people use it in different ways. I had no idea it would become such a thing, but it’s cool to be a part of it.”
– Eric Sogard
Of course, not everyone is a fan of the meme. Some people find it overused or not particularly funny. But for the most part, the Safe Baseball meme has been a hit with baseball fans and meme enthusiasts alike.
Is It Here to Stay?
So, is the Safe Baseball meme just a passing trend, or is it here to stay? It’s hard to say for sure, but signs point to the latter. The fact that the meme has been around for several years and is still going strong is a good indication that it’s not going away anytime soon.
Plus, the versatility of the meme means that it can continue to be used in a variety of situations, not just in reference to baseball. As long as people find it funny and relevant, the Safe Baseball meme will likely stick around for a while.
Final Thoughts
The Safe Baseball meme may not be the most sophisticated or intellectual meme out there, but it’s certainly one of the most beloved. Its simplicity and versatility have made it a hit with fans of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you’re a die-hard baseball fan or just someone who appreciates a good meme, the Safe Baseball meme is sure to bring a smile to your face.
