The Origins of the Kermit Meme
The Kermit the Frog screaming meme originated from a scene in the Muppets Most Wanted movie, released in 2014. In the scene, Kermit is falsely accused of being an international criminal and is thrown into a Russian prison. As the other prisoners taunt him, Kermit loses his cool and screams in frustration, which is where the meme image comes from.
Soon after the movie’s release, the image began circulating on social media platforms like Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit. Users would add their own captions to the image, often using it to express their own frustrations or to make a humorous observation about a particular situation. The meme became so popular that it spawned countless variations, including “evil Kermit” and “sipping tea Kermit.”
