The Origins of the Meme
The original photo that started it all was taken in 2016, during a press tour for the film The Accountant. Affleck was photographed looking dejected while smoking a cigarette, and the photo quickly went viral. From there, people began creating their own memes using the photo, and the Ben Affleck Meme Family was born.
The meme gained even more popularity in 2019, when Affleck was photographed smoking and looking sad once again. This time, however, he was accompanied by his co-star, Matt Damon, who looked equally sad. The photo was quickly turned into a meme, with people jokingly speculating about what could have caused the two actors to look so down.
The Appeal of the Meme
So why has the Ben Affleck Meme Family become so popular? For one, it’s relatable. Who among us hasn’t had a moment where we felt sad or frustrated? The meme captures that feeling perfectly, and the captions that accompany each image only add to the humor.
Additionally, Affleck’s well-known struggles with addiction and sobriety have added another layer of meaning to the meme. Many people have expressed support for Affleck and appreciation for his willingness to be vulnerable and honest about his struggles, and the memes have become a way to show that support in a lighthearted way.
The Future of the Meme
As with all internet memes, it’s difficult to predict how long the Ben Affleck Meme Family will remain popular. However, there’s no denying that it has already become a staple in the world of internet humor, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
Even Affleck himself has gotten in on the joke, referencing the meme in interviews and on social media. In a 2021 interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Affleck joked about how his kids had started calling him “Sad Affleck” after the meme went viral.
