Back in the early 2000s, Terrell Owens was one of the most explosive wide receivers in the NFL. He was known for his incredible athleticism, his showboating celebrations, and his larger-than-life personality. But as his career went on, Owens became just as famous for his off-field antics as his on-field exploits. And in recent years, Owens has become an unexpected internet sensation thanks to a viral meme that has taken on a life of its own.

The Birth of the Terrell Owens Meme
The Terrell Owens meme originated from a 2004 interview with former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. In the interview, McNabb was asked about Owens’ performance in a game against the Dallas Cowboys, and he responded by saying that Owens “played well within the system.” Owens, who was known for his ego and his desire to be the center of attention, took offense to McNabb’s comments and began to pout on the sidelines. A photographer captured a shot of Owens with a dejected look on his face, and the rest is internet history.
The photo of Owens quickly became a meme, with people adding their own captions and jokes to the image. The most popular version of the meme features Owens with a thought bubble that says “that’s my quarterback,” a reference to his tearful defense of McNabb during a press conference later that season. The meme has been used to express a wide range of emotions, from sadness and disappointment to loyalty and devotion.
The Terrell Owens Meme Goes Viral
While the Terrell Owens meme has been around for years, it didn’t really take off until 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced people to spend more time online than ever before. The meme became a way for people to express their feelings about the pandemic, the election, and other current events. It also became a way for people to connect with each other and find humor in a difficult time.
Several celebrities, including LeBron James and Snoop Dogg, have shared the Terrell Owens meme on their social media accounts, further increasing its popularity. And as the meme has spread, it has taken on new meanings and interpretations. Some people see it as a symbol of loyalty and devotion, while others see it as a representation of sadness and disappointment.
The Legacy of the Terrell Owens Meme
While the Terrell Owens meme has brought joy and laughter to millions of people, it’s worth remembering that it has a darker origin. The meme was born out of a moment of petulance and ego, and it’s a reminder of the toxic culture that can sometimes surround professional sports. It’s also a reminder of the toll that fame and success can take on a person’s mental health.
Despite its origins, the Terrell Owens meme has become a cultural touchstone, and it’s likely to remain a part of internet culture for years to come. Whether you see it as a symbol of loyalty or a representation of sadness, there’s no denying that the image of Owens with a dejected look on his face has taken on a life of its own. And as long as people continue to find humor and connection in the meme, it will continue to be a part of our cultural landscape.
Responses from Terrell Owens and Donovan McNabb
Terrell Owens has not commented on the meme directly, but he has spoken about his relationship with Donovan McNabb in the past. In a 2018 interview with Bleacher Report, Owens said that he regretted the way he handled the situation and wished he could go back and change things. He also said that he and McNabb had buried the hatchet and were on good terms.
Donovan McNabb has also spoken about the incident and the meme. In a 2021 interview with TMZ, McNabb said that he thought the meme was funny and that he had no hard feelings toward Owens. He also said that he was glad that the meme had brought joy to so many people.
Final Thoughts
The Terrell Owens meme is a testament to the power of the internet to take a moment of petulance and turn it into something that brings joy and laughter to millions of people. While it’s important to remember the darker origins of the meme, it’s also worth celebrating the way that it has brought people together and created a shared cultural experience. And who knows? Maybe in a few years, there will be a new meme that captures our imaginations and brings us all together once again.
