In 2016, the internet was graced with a new meme that quickly took over social media platforms. The Hand Meme Arthur featured a still shot from an episode of the children’s show Arthur, where the titular character clenched his fist in anger. This image was then photoshopped onto a variety of scenarios, from political commentary to pop culture references. However, by 2023, the meme has fallen out of favor and is all but forgotten. Let’s take a look back at the rise and fall of the Hand Meme Arthur.

The Origins of Hand Meme Arthur
The Hand Meme Arthur originated from a scene in the season 1 episode “Arthur’s Big Hit” where Arthur punches his friend Buster after a game of baseball goes awry. A still shot of Arthur clenching his fist in anger became a popular reaction image on social media, particularly on Twitter. The image was quickly adapted into various memes, with users adding their own captions and commentary to the picture.
One of the earliest popular uses of the Hand Meme Arthur was during the 2016 United States presidential election. The image was frequently used to express frustration or anger towards the candidates and their policies.
The Peak of Hand Meme Arthur
By early 2017, the Hand Meme Arthur had become ubiquitous on social media. It was used to express a wide range of emotions, from anger and frustration to excitement and joy. The meme had also spread beyond Twitter and was being shared on other platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
One particularly popular use of the Hand Meme Arthur was in reaction to pop culture events. For example, after the release of the movie Get Out, users created memes featuring Arthur’s fist with captions like “When you realize the sunken place is real.”
The Decline of Hand Meme Arthur
As with all memes, the popularity of Hand Meme Arthur eventually began to wane. By late 2018, the meme was being used less frequently and had largely disappeared from social media. Some users had grown tired of seeing the same image over and over, while others simply moved on to newer memes.
However, the final nail in the coffin for Hand Meme Arthur came in 2020 when the creator of Arthur, Marc Brown, publicly denounced the meme. In an interview with VICE, Brown expressed his disapproval of the meme and stated that he did not want his characters to be associated with political commentary.
The Legacy of Hand Meme Arthur
Despite its relatively short lifespan, Hand Meme Arthur left a lasting impact on internet culture. The meme was a prime example of how a single image can be repurposed and recontextualized to express a wide range of emotions and ideas.
Some users still look back on the meme fondly, remembering the creativity and humor that it inspired. Others, however, view it as a relic of a bygone era of internet culture.
Response from Fans
When asked about Hand Meme Arthur, some fans expressed fond memories of the meme. “I used to love seeing all the different ways people would use that image,” said Twitter user @memelord69. “It was a great way to express frustration or anger without resorting to name-calling or insults.”
Others, however, were more critical of the meme. “I never really got the appeal of Hand Meme Arthur,” said Instagram user @memequeen123. “It just seemed kind of played out and overused.”
Conclusion
Hand Meme Arthur may be a distant memory for many internet users, but its impact on meme culture is undeniable. The meme’s ability to convey a wide range of emotions through a single image was a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of internet users.
