In 2021, the internet was abuzz with a new meme featuring Ben Affleck as Batman. The meme took off after a clip of Affleck looking sad and dejected during an interview went viral. Soon, the clip was edited to include captions poking fun at the actor and his portrayal of the Dark Knight.
The Affleck Batman meme quickly became a sensation, with thousands of variations popping up on social media sites like Twitter and Instagram. Some memes lampooned Affleck’s acting ability, while others made fun of the notoriously dark tone of the DC Extended Universe movies.

The Meme Goes Mainstream
As the Affleck Batman meme gained steam, it began to spill over into the mainstream media. Late-night talk show hosts like Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert featured the meme in their monologues, and even Affleck himself acknowledged the joke during an appearance on The Late Show with James Corden.
Despite the meme’s popularity, not everyone was a fan. Some criticized the joke for being mean-spirited, while others argued that it was played out and no longer funny.
The Backlash Begins
As with any internet meme, the Affleck Batman joke eventually reached its saturation point. People began to tire of seeing the same image and caption over and over again, and some even started to push back against the trend.
One Twitter user wrote, “The Affleck Batman meme was funny at first, but now it’s just lazy and unoriginal. Let’s move on to something new.” Others pointed out that the meme was based on a clip of Affleck discussing his personal struggles, and that it was insensitive to mock him for it.
The End of an Era
By the end of 2022, the Affleck Batman meme had largely run its course. While some die-hard fans continued to create new versions of the joke, the majority of people had moved on to something else.
So what can we learn from the rise and fall of the Affleck Batman meme? For one thing, it’s clear that internet jokes have a limited lifespan. What’s funny one day can quickly become tiresome the next. It’s also worth remembering that the people we’re joking about are real human beings with real feelings. While it’s okay to have a laugh at someone’s expense, we should always be mindful of the impact our jokes might have.
