In the early 2020s, the world was introduced to a phenomenon that would change the way we communicate forever – memes. These humorous images and videos spread like wildfire across social media platforms and quickly became a staple of internet culture. One particularly memorable meme that rose to fame in Mexico was “Memes Del Piojo,” featuring former soccer coach Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera. Let’s take a look back at the history of this iconic meme and its eventual demise.

The Birth of Memes Del Piojo
In 2014, Miguel Herrera became a national hero in Mexico after leading the national soccer team to the Round of 16 in the World Cup. His passionate coaching style and iconic celebrations on the sidelines made him a beloved figure in the country. However, his tenure as coach was short-lived, and he was fired in 2015 after an alleged altercation with a journalist.
It wasn’t until a year later that the first Memes Del Piojo began to appear on social media. The meme features a photo of Herrera with his arms crossed and a smug expression on his face, accompanied by a humorous caption. The meme quickly went viral in Mexico and became a cultural phenomenon.
The Golden Age of Memes Del Piojo
For the next few years, Memes Del Piojo dominated social media in Mexico. The meme was used to poke fun at everything from politics to pop culture, and even Herrera himself got in on the joke. He embraced the meme and even posed for photos with fans imitating his iconic pose.
“I never thought I’d become a meme, but it’s been a lot of fun,” Herrera said in a 2017 interview. “It’s great to see people laughing and having a good time with it.”
The Decline of Memes Del Piojo
As with all internet memes, Memes Del Piojo eventually began to lose its popularity. By 2023, the meme had all but disappeared from social media in Mexico. Some people attribute the decline to the fact that Herrera has been out of the public eye for several years. Others say that the meme simply ran its course and that it’s time to move on to the next big thing.
“I used to love Memes Del Piojo, but it’s just not funny anymore,” said 23-year-old college student Sofia Gomez. “I think we need something new to keep us entertained.”
The Legacy of Memes Del Piojo
Despite its decline in popularity, Memes Del Piojo will always hold a special place in the hearts of Mexican internet users. The meme served as a way for people to come together and share a laugh during difficult times, such as the 2017 earthquake in Mexico City.
“Memes Del Piojo brought a lot of joy to people during a really tough time,” said 35-year-old graphic designer Carlos Rodriguez. “It’s something that we’ll always remember fondly.”
Conclusion
As with all internet memes, Memes Del Piojo had its moment in the sun and eventually faded away. However, the legacy of the meme will live on as a testament to the power of humor and its ability to bring people together.
“I’m grateful for the time I had as a meme,” Herrera said in a recent interview. “It was a lot of fun, and I’ll always be proud to have been a part of it.”
