It’s been almost a decade since the release of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, and almost five years since the TV adaptation premiered on Hulu. Despite the time that has passed, the show’s impact continues to reverberate. One of the most enduring legacies of the show is the “Praise Be” meme, which has taken on a life of its own beyond the show’s original context.

What is the “Praise Be” Meme?
The “Praise Be” meme originated from a scene in the show’s first season where the Handmaids are assembled in a circle, and one of them gives birth to a child. The other Handmaids, who are not allowed to speak, start murmuring “Praise be” in unison, as a way of celebrating the birth. The scene is haunting, as it underscores the Handmaids’ lack of autonomy and individuality.
Despite the somber tone of the scene, the “Praise Be” phrase has taken on a life of its own on the internet. Memes featuring the phrase have been created and shared widely, often with a humorous or ironic twist. The meme has become a shorthand for expressing gratitude or admiration, but also for mocking the absurdity of certain situations or institutions.
The Memes That Have Gone Viral
Some of the most popular “Praise Be” memes are those that use the phrase in unexpected or ridiculous ways. For example, a meme might feature a picture of a dog doing a trick, with the caption “Praise Be,” as a way of expressing admiration for the dog’s abilities. Another popular meme features a picture of a chaotic scene, such as a crowded subway car or a messy room, with the caption “Praise Be” as a way of mocking the chaos.
The “Praise Be” meme has also been used in a more serious way, to express solidarity with marginalized groups or to highlight social justice issues. For example, during the #MeToo movement, some people used the “Praise Be” phrase to express support for survivors of sexual assault.
The Impact of the Meme
The “Praise Be” meme has become a cultural touchstone, and its impact extends beyond the show’s original audience. The phrase has been used in political protests, as a way of expressing solidarity and resistance. It has also been used in marketing campaigns, as a way of appealing to the show’s fanbase.
One of the reasons the “Praise Be” meme has resonated so strongly with people is its versatility. The phrase can be used to express a wide range of emotions, from joy to irony to anger. It’s a way of acknowledging the absurdity of certain situations, while also finding humor or hope in them.
