In 2012, the United States presidential election was in full swing, with Republican nominee Mitt Romney facing off against incumbent President Barack Obama. During the second presidential debate on October 16, 2012, Romney made a comment that would go on to become one of the most memorable moments of the campaign.

Romney’s Comment
When asked a question about pay equity for women in the workforce, Romney responded by saying that as Governor of Massachusetts, he had “whole binders full of women” that he had considered for cabinet positions. The comment was intended to show that Romney was committed to promoting women in leadership roles, but it quickly became a meme that would follow him for the rest of the campaign.
The Meme Takes Off
Within hours of the debate, the phrase “binders full of women” was trending on Twitter and had spawned countless memes and parodies. Some people found the comment to be condescending and out of touch, while others saw it as an innocent gaffe. Regardless of how people felt about it, the phrase had taken on a life of its own.
Responses from Women’s Groups
Many women’s groups seized on the comment as an opportunity to highlight issues of gender equality in the workplace. The National Women’s Law Center created a “Binders Full of Women” Tumblr page that featured stories from women who had experienced discrimination in the workplace.
Other groups, such as the National Organization for Women, criticized Romney’s record on women’s issues, pointing out that he had opposed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and had promised to defund Planned Parenthood.
Romney’s Response
Despite the backlash, Romney stood by his comment, saying that he was proud of the fact that he had actively sought out qualified women for leadership positions. However, he also acknowledged that the comment had been a mistake, saying in an interview with CNN that he wished he had phrased it differently.
The Legacy of the Meme
The “binders full of women” meme may have started as a lighthearted joke, but it quickly became a symbol for larger issues of gender equality in the workplace. The phrase was used to call attention to the fact that women are often overlooked for leadership roles and are paid less than their male counterparts.
While the meme itself may have faded into obscurity, the issues that it highlighted are still relevant today. Women continue to fight for equal pay and equal representation in leadership positions, and the phrase “binders full of women” serves as a reminder of how far we still have to go.
Comments from People Who Remember It
Janet Johnson, 42, Marketing Director
“I remember watching the debate and being really taken aback by Romney’s comment. It just seemed so out of touch with what women really wanted and needed in the workplace. It’s crazy to think that this was only a few years ago, but it feels like we’ve come a long way since then.”
Mike Rodriguez, 36, IT Consultant
“I never really understood why this became such a big deal. It was obviously just a slip of the tongue, and I think people were just looking for something to be outraged about. I don’t think it had any real impact on the election.”
Samantha Lee, 29, Freelance Writer
“The ‘binders full of women’ meme was hilarious, but it also had a serious message behind it. It was a reminder that women are still fighting for equal representation in the workplace, and that we need to keep pushing for change. I’m glad that the meme started a conversation about these issues.”
Conclusion
The Mitt Romney binders full of women meme may have been a fleeting moment in the 2012 presidential campaign, but it had a lasting impact on discussions of gender equality in the workplace. While progress has been made in recent years, there is still much work to be done to ensure that women are given the same opportunities as men. The meme may have started as a joke, but it ultimately became a call to action for those who believe in a more equitable world.
