What are Memes?
Before we dive into the meanest memes, let’s first define what a meme is. A meme is an image, video, or piece of text that is shared widely on the internet, often with a humorous or satirical message. Memes can spread quickly and virally, often becoming a cultural phenomenon.
While memes can be a fun and harmless way to express oneself, they can also be used to spread hateful and hurtful messages. In recent years, there has been an uptick in the creation of memes that target marginalized groups, such as women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The Meanest Memes
The “Pepe” Meme
The “Pepe” meme started as a harmless cartoon frog character, but was later co-opted by the alt-right movement as a symbol of white supremacy. The meme was used to spread hateful messages against people of color, Jews, and Muslims. In 2017, the Anti-Defamation League classified the “Pepe” meme as a hate symbol.
Response:
“As a Jewish person, seeing the “Pepe” meme being used as a symbol of hate is deeply upsetting. It’s important to call out this kind of behavior and hold those responsible accountable.” – Rachel K., 28
The “NPC” Meme
The “NPC” meme was created to dehumanize individuals who hold progressive beliefs. The term “NPC” stands for “non-playable character,” a term used in video games to describe characters that lack free will and are controlled by the game’s programming. The meme was used to suggest that people who hold progressive beliefs are not capable of independent thought.
Response:
“The “NPC” meme is a prime example of how the internet can be used to spread hateful and divisive messages. It’s important to remember that people with different beliefs are still human beings, and should be treated with respect.” – Sarah H., 35
The “OK” Hand Gesture Meme
The “OK” hand gesture meme was created as a harmless gesture, but later became co-opted by white supremacists as a symbol of white power. The meme was used to troll and harass people of color, and was often used in conjunction with other hate symbols.
Response:
“It’s disturbing to see how easily symbols and gestures can be co-opted and used to spread hate. We need to be vigilant and call out this kind of behavior when we see it.” – Mark L., 42
The Impact of Mean Memes
Mean memes can have a serious impact on our society. They can contribute to a culture of hate and intolerance, and can make marginalized groups feel even more marginalized. Mean memes can also contribute to a toxic online culture, where trolling and harassment are seen as acceptable forms of behavior.
It’s important to remember that words and images have power, and that we need to use that power responsibly. We need to be mindful of the impact our online actions can have, and strive to create a more positive and inclusive online community.
Conclusion
While memes can be a fun and harmless way to express oneself, we need to be aware of the impact they can have. Mean memes can contribute to a culture of hate and intolerance, and can make marginalized groups feel even more marginalized. It’s up to all of us to use our online platforms responsibly, and to create a more positive and inclusive online community.
