The Scene
The scene in question takes place towards the end of the film, when Stephen sees a meme of himself on a tablet. The meme features a picture of Stephen with the caption “When you’ve been a house slave for 85 years and you still get called a n*****.” Stephen is visibly upset by the meme, and his reaction has become a popular internet meme in its own right.
The scene has been interpreted in a number of ways. Some see it as a commentary on the power of memes and social media to shape our perceptions of ourselves and others. Others see it as an example of Tarantino’s trademark irreverence and willingness to push boundaries.
The Legacy
The Django Unchained meme scene has had a lasting impact on popular culture since the film’s release in 2012. The meme has been shared millions of times on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and has inspired countless parodies and remixes.
One of the most notable responses to the meme came from Samuel L. Jackson himself. In a 2013 interview with MTV News, Jackson said that he found the meme “funny as hell,” and that he was flattered that people were still talking about the film.
The Controversy
While the meme has been widely embraced by fans of the film, it has also been the subject of controversy. Some have criticized the meme as insensitive and inappropriate, arguing that it makes light of the serious issues of racism and slavery that the film addresses.
Others have defended the meme as a form of satire that highlights the absurdity of racism and the enduring legacy of slavery in American society.
