The Origin of the Meme
The “cold outside” meme was first popularized by a Twitter user who posted a picture of their pet dog wearing a jacket and the caption “It’s cold outside.” The tweet quickly went viral, with others jumping on the bandwagon and sharing pictures of their own pets or themselves bundled up in winter gear with the same caption.
From there, the meme evolved and took on a life of its own. People began using it to depict all sorts of scenarios where the cold weather is a factor, from shoveling snow to waiting at the bus stop.
The Humor in the Meme
What makes the “cold outside” meme so hilarious is its relatability. Anyone who has experienced cold weather can sympathize with the feeling of wanting to bundle up and stay warm. The meme takes that relatable feeling and turns it into a comedic situation, often with unexpected twists.
For example, one iteration of the meme features a picture of a penguin wearing a scarf and the caption “It’s cold outside.” It’s unexpected because penguins are known for living in cold weather, but the humor comes from the fact that even they need to bundle up sometimes.
