In the summer of 2017, a viral meme swept across social media platforms: a photograph of a girl with her feet on the dashboard of a car. The image seemed harmless enough, but it soon became a symbol of a dangerous trend that many people had never considered before. As it turns out, resting your feet on the dashboard while riding in a car can be incredibly hazardous, and the meme sparked a conversation about the importance of safety on the road.

The Risks of Feet on Dashboard
While many people might think that putting their feet up while riding in a car is a harmless way to get comfortable, the truth is that it can be incredibly dangerous. In the event of an accident, the force of the airbag can cause severe injuries to the legs and feet, including broken bones, severe burns, and even amputation. In fact, one woman who put her feet up on the dashboard suffered a broken nose, ankle, and femur when her airbag deployed during an accident.
Aside from the risks of airbag injuries, having your feet on the dashboard can also make it difficult to brace yourself in the event of a collision. When your feet are up, your body is not in a stable position, and you are more likely to be thrown around in the car. Plus, if you are not wearing a seatbelt, having your feet up makes it even more likely that you will be ejected from the vehicle in the event of an accident.
The Public’s Reaction to the Meme
When the feet on dashboard meme first started to circulate, many people found it amusing and even participated in the trend themselves. However, as more information about the risks of the trend began to surface, public opinion started to shift. Many people who had previously put their feet up while riding in a car began to realize the dangers of the trend and stopped doing it altogether. Others took to social media to speak out against the meme and urge their friends and followers to prioritize safety while on the road.
One Twitter user wrote, “I used to put my feet up on the dashboard all the time until I saw that picture of the girl who got her legs crushed in an accident. Never again.” Another user commented, “I used to think it was cool to put my feet up while riding in the car, but now I know better. Safety first, always.”
Current Trends in Car Safety
Since the feet on dashboard meme went viral in 2017, there has been a renewed focus on car safety across the board. Automakers have been working to improve safety features in their vehicles, from airbags to collision avoidance systems. Meanwhile, the public has become more aware of the risks of distracted driving, and many states have passed laws to discourage dangerous behaviors like texting or using a cellphone while behind the wheel.
However, there is still work to be done when it comes to improving safety on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were over 36,000 traffic fatalities in the United States in 2018 alone. While this number is down from previous years, it is still far too high, and there is a need for continued efforts to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving practices.
Conclusion
The feet on dashboard meme was a viral trend that sparked an important conversation about the importance of safety while on the road. While it may seem harmless to put your feet up while riding in a car, the risks of doing so are simply not worth it. With continued efforts to raise awareness about safe driving practices, we can work to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on the road and ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safely.
