Back in 2001, a little indie film called Donnie Darko was released to critical acclaim. The mind-bending story of a troubled teenager who is plagued by visions of a giant rabbit named Frank has since become a cult classic. But it wasn’t until 2021 that a particular scene from the film became a viral meme sensation.

The Easter Bunny Scene
In the film, there is a scene where Donnie (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and his family are discussing which holiday is better, Halloween or Christmas. Donnie’s little sister Samantha argues that Halloween is better because you get to dress up and scare people. Donnie disagrees and says that Easter is the best holiday because it’s the only time of year where you get to “smuggle drugs in a bunny suit.”
For years, this line was just a memorable quote from the film. But in 2021, someone on Twitter turned it into a hilarious meme. The meme features a screenshot of Donnie in his bunny suit with the caption “Me on Easter trying to smuggle drugs into the family gathering.”
Internet Fame
Once the meme took off, it quickly spread across social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. People from all over the world were creating their own versions of the meme, inserting themselves or their pets into the screenshot.
The meme was so popular that it even caught the attention of the film’s director, Richard Kelly. In an interview with IndieWire, Kelly said, “It’s so bizarre. It’s the most unlikely thing. But it’s hilarious.”
