The Origin of the Dexter Meme
The Dexter meme features a still image of the titular character from a scene in the show. In the image, Dexter is holding a knife and looking at it intently, with the caption “Me trying to decide which knife to use to cut my steak.” The meme first appeared on social media in early 2023 and quickly gained popularity.
Many fans of the show found the meme hilarious and praised it for its clever use of a well-known character. However, others criticized it for making light of the show’s dark themes and glorifying violence. Some even called for the meme to be taken down, claiming that it was offensive and insensitive.
The Dexter Meme Stunt: What Is It?
As the meme continued to spread across social media, rumors started to circulate that it was not just a random internet phenomenon, but a deliberate marketing strategy by the creators of the show. The idea was that the meme would generate buzz and excitement for a potential Dexter revival or spin-off.
Of course, this was just speculation at the time, and there was no concrete evidence to support it. However, as the Dexter meme continued to dominate social media, more and more people started to believe that there was something more to it than just a silly joke.
The Reaction from Fans and Critics
As with any controversial topic, the Dexter meme stunt received a wide range of reactions from fans and critics. Some praised it as a genius marketing move that would help bring back the beloved show, while others condemned it as a cheap and insensitive ploy to cash in on the show’s popularity.
One fan tweeted, “If this is a marketing stunt, then I have to say it’s pretty clever. I would love to see more of Dexter, and if this is the way to make it happen, then I’m all for it.” Another fan wrote, “I don’t think this meme is offensive at all. It’s just a funny joke, and people need to lighten up.”
However, not everyone was so supportive. One critic tweeted, “This is just sad. If this is what it takes to get people excited about a new Dexter project, then maybe we should just let it die.” Another critic wrote, “I can’t believe they would use a meme like this to promote a show about a serial killer. It’s in poor taste, to say the least.”

According to anonymous sources within the production team, the meme was indeed created as a way to gauge interest in a potential Dexter revival or spin-off.
However, the sources also clarified that the meme was not part of a larger, coordinated marketing campaign. Instead, it was just a fun idea that a few people came up with and decided to put out into the world to see what would happen.
