What Makes a Meme “Dank”?
The term “dank” is often used to describe memes that are particularly funny, absurd, or relatable. These memes often push the boundaries of what’s considered socially acceptable or use humor in unexpected ways. They may also be self-referential, referencing other memes or internet culture in general. In short, dank memes are the cream of the crop when it comes to internet humor.
But what sets them apart from other memes? For one, they often require a certain level of cultural literacy to fully appreciate. Dank memes may reference obscure movies, TV shows, or internet subcultures that not everyone is familiar with. They may also use complex or abstract humor that requires a bit of thought to fully understand. In short, dank memes are often memes for the meme enthusiasts.
The Classics
While new memes are being created all the time, some memes have stood the test of time and continue to be considered some of the dankest memes in existence. Take, for example, the “This is Fine” dog. Originally a comic by artist KC Green, this meme features an anthropomorphic dog sitting in a burning room, calmly sipping coffee and saying “this is fine.” The meme has been used to represent everything from political apathy to general existential dread.
Another classic is the “Ight, Imma head out” meme, which features a photo of SpongeBob SquarePants getting up from a chair and walking out the door. The caption “Ight, Imma head out” has been used to represent everything from leaving an uncomfortable situation to expressing general disinterest.
The Latest Trends
Of course, there are plenty of new memes that have emerged in recent years that are just as dank as the classics. One of the most popular is the “stonks” meme, which features a poorly-drawn graph with the word “stonks” written above it. The meme is often used to represent a situation that’s going well, even if it doesn’t make logical sense.
Another popular meme is the “distracted boyfriend” meme, which features a stock photo of a man turning his head to look at another woman while his girlfriend looks on in shock. The meme has been used to represent everything from infidelity to general distraction.
