In 2016, the United States was in the midst of a heated presidential election. Donald Trump, a businessman and reality TV star, had emerged as the Republican nominee, and his campaign was marked by controversy and scandal from the beginning. One of the most notorious moments of the election cycle was the release of a recording in which Trump was heard boasting about grabbing women “by the pussy.”
The recording, which was from a 2005 interview with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush, sparked outrage and condemnation from across the political spectrum. Many women came forward with stories of sexual assault and harassment by Trump, and the phrase “grab them by the pussy” quickly became a rallying cry for his opponents.

The Birth of the Meme
As with any major news event, the “grab them by the pussy” scandal quickly spawned a multitude of memes and viral content. Some of it was humorous, some of it was angry, and some of it was just plain bizarre. One of the most enduring memes to come out of the scandal was an image of a cat with Donald Trump’s face, accompanied by the caption “grab America by the pussy.”
The meme was both a commentary on Trump’s attitude towards women and a way for people to express their anger and frustration with the election. It quickly spread across social media and became a symbol of resistance against Trump’s candidacy.
The Reaction
The “grab America by the pussy” meme was not without its detractors, however. Some people felt that it was crude and offensive, and that it trivialized the very real issue of sexual assault. Others argued that it was a powerful form of political satire and that humor was an important tool for coping with difficult times.
Celebrities and public figures also weighed in on the meme. Comedian Kathy Griffin tweeted a photo of herself holding a mask of Trump’s head, with the caption “I caption this ‘there was blood coming out of his eyes, blood coming out of his…wherever.'” The tweet was widely criticized for being in poor taste and Griffin later apologized.
The Legacy
In the years since the election, the “grab America by the pussy” meme has faded somewhat from public consciousness. However, it remains a potent symbol of the political and cultural divisions that continue to plague the United States. The #MeToo movement, which began in 2017, brought renewed attention to issues of sexual assault and harassment, and many women have continued to speak out against Trump and his policies.
The meme also serves as a reminder of the power of social media to shape political discourse. In 2016, memes and viral content played a significant role in the election, and many experts believe that they will continue to be an important factor in shaping public opinion.
Expert Opinions

“The ‘grab America by the pussy’ meme was a powerful way for people to express their frustration with the election and their opposition to Trump. However, it also trivialized the very real issue of sexual assault and harassment. I think that in the long run, people will remember the meme more for its message than for its humor.”
