Black Friday has always been a hectic time for shoppers and retailers alike. But in 2023, the annual shopping event took an unexpected turn, thanks to a viral meme that sparked a real-life shipping nightmare. Here’s what happened.

The Birth of the Memes
It all started with a few innocent memes. As Black Friday approached, social media users began sharing images of cargo ships overloaded with packages, accompanied by sarcastic captions like “Can’t wait for my Black Friday deals to arrive!” and “This is fine, everything is fine.”
The memes quickly spread across the internet, with thousands of users joining in on the joke. But little did they know, their humor would soon have real-life consequences.
The Reality of the Situation
As it turns out, the memes were not entirely unfounded. In the weeks leading up to Black Friday, retailers had indeed overstocked their inventories and placed massive orders with shipping companies. But due to a combination of factors – including supply chain disruptions, worker shortages, and bad weather – many of these packages were delayed en route.
As the backlog of packages grew, shipping companies were forced to resort to extreme measures. Some vessels were rerouted to alternative ports, while others were forced to anchor offshore until they could be unloaded. And in the midst of it all, one cargo ship in particular became the unwitting star of the internet’s latest viral sensation.
The Ever Given 2
The ship in question was the Ever Given 2, a massive container vessel that had been traversing the Suez Canal when it became stuck in March of 2021. The ship had since been refloated and was on its way to its next destination when it was caught up in the Black Friday shipping chaos.
As the ship approached the Port of Los Angeles, it was met with a barrage of media attention and internet memes. Photoshopped images of the ship with “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” banners draped across its sides circulated on social media, while news outlets ran stories about the vessel’s unexpected detour.
The Fallout
While the memes may have been amusing to some, the reality of the situation was far from funny. As delays continued to mount, retailers were forced to cancel orders and issue refunds to frustrated customers. Shipping companies faced mounting pressure to clear the backlog of packages, all while dealing with their own financial losses and logistical challenges.
Meanwhile, the crew of the Ever Given 2 found themselves unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight. Some crew members reported feeling embarrassed and frustrated by the attention, while others took it in stride and even joined in on the joke.
Lessons Learned
As the dust settled on the Black Friday shipping debacle, many industry experts were left wondering what could be done to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future. Some suggested that retailers needed to be more realistic in their inventory planning and avoid overstocking their warehouses. Others pointed to the need for greater investment in shipping infrastructure and technology.
But perhaps the most important lesson of all was the power of the internet to turn a harmless joke into a real-life nightmare. As one shipping executive remarked, “We never thought a few memes could cause so much chaos. It just goes to show how quickly things can spiral out of control in today’s connected world.”
