The Birth of Woomy

Woomy is a catchphrase that originated from Splatoon’s Inklings, the humanoid squid characters that players control in the game. When an Inkling performs a “booyah” gesture, they sometimes say “woomy” instead. The exact origin of the phrase is unclear, but it’s believed to have been created by the game’s developers as a playful, non-sensical word that would add to the game’s charm.

But it wasn’t long before fans of the game started using “woomy” as a meme. It started with Splatoon players using the phrase as a way to communicate with each other during matches. For example, if one player was about to use a special weapon, they might say “Woomy incoming!” to let their teammates know.
