It’s hard to believe that it has been almost a decade since the “dogma lives loudly within you” meme took the internet by storm. Back in 2017, the phrase became a viral sensation after it was uttered by Senator Dianne Feinstein during the confirmation hearing for Amy Coney Barrett, who was then a nominee for the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Since then, the phrase has been used as a rallying cry by both sides of the political spectrum, and has been the subject of countless memes, tweets, and social media posts. But what exactly does the “dogma lives loudly within you” meme mean, and why has it continued to have such a lasting impact?

Origins of the Meme

The “dogma lives loudly within you” meme was born out of a contentious exchange between Senator Feinstein and Barrett during her confirmation hearing. Feinstein, who is known for her pro-choice stance, expressed concern that Barrett’s Catholic faith would influence her rulings on abortion and other social issues.

“The dogma lives loudly within you,” Feinstein said to Barrett, adding that “that’s of concern when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for years in this country.”

Barrett, who is a devout Catholic, responded by saying that her personal beliefs would not influence her judicial decisions, and that she would uphold the law regardless of her own views.

Political Significance

The “dogma lives loudly within you” meme quickly became a polarizing symbol of the culture wars that have come to define American politics. For conservatives, the phrase was seen as an attack on religious freedom and a prime example of liberal intolerance.

Many on the left, however, saw the phrase as a valid critique of Barrett’s potential bias and a warning about the dangers of allowing personal beliefs to influence public policy.

The controversy surrounding the “dogma lives loudly within you” meme only intensified when Barrett was later nominated to the Supreme Court by President Donald Trump, and was confirmed by the Senate in 2020.

Impact on Pop Culture

Despite its political origins, the “dogma lives loudly within you” meme has also had a significant impact on pop culture. The phrase has been featured in countless memes, t-shirts, and even Halloween costumes.

One of the most memorable instances of the meme in popular culture came in 2018, when Saturday Night Live aired a sketch in which Kate McKinnon portrayed Feinstein and delivered a parody of the infamous line.

Reflections on the Meme

As we look back on the “dogma lives loudly within you” meme in 2023, it’s clear that it has had a lasting impact on American politics and culture.

Some people see the phrase as a powerful statement about the importance of keeping personal beliefs separate from public policy, while others view it as a dangerous attack on religious freedom and individual liberty.

Regardless of one’s political views, it’s clear that the “dogma lives loudly within you” meme will continue to be remembered as a significant moment in American history.
